I volunteered two years ago at a school for a teaching assistant position. Try not to resort to violence, but lecturing does help. Not a serious lecture though (Like where I blew up at one kid who was wasting water in the boy's bathroom, but that's another story.) There are some kids who pick it up quick, and some kids who take more time. You simply need patience. Even if the kid is repeating the act, you have to reprimand him every time he does it. You also can't have a soft heart either, or else they'll find ways to pry into your soft spots.
But yeah, what Rayquazza said. Sit them down, one on one and talk to them. Ask them why they are doing so and so and tell them why it's wrong and such in a proper manner.
