Futhermore, why bother hiring GMs at all if one programmer can wipe out all hackers for a patch?
I don't think it's that Nexon likes the lack of GM presence. It's just cheaper to take care of hackers by other means than brute force.

Just a random point about Nexon over this issue. I am by no means a Nexon Fanboy, but I don't think they are necessarily doing this because they "want" to. Its similar to a case I saw on a mailing list for an author I was on a few years ago. A couple of guys created a MUD based on his books and contacted him about it. He then served them with a cease and desist order to bring down their game even though it was a text-based game and they werent charging (and had no intention to) to play the game. When questioned about it on his mailing list he replied along the lines of:
I wasnt against them for what they did. I actually played the game and was impressed with the level of detail they put in. But my legal advice told me that if someone else came along and created a game based on my works and then charged people to play, I would not be able to send them a cease and desist notice as I had let the free one go. Legally I have to stop ALL people using my work unless they pay me a licence.
This is the same situation here. If nexon lets the free pservers go on about their business, then others could charge and Nexon would not be able to stop them as they had already let some "slip through the cracks".

If I use MTS it is with money Nexon already has, makes no difference to their bottom line if I have 10k or 1000k in MTS. I havent given any money to Nexon. So if I go and play a PS they havent lost any revenue from me or the multitudes like me.
There are lots like me who wont spend a cent and would rather play a PS with all the benefits they offer compared to Nexon's rubbish service and "$$$ before customers" attitude. They lose no income from people like me.
*Note, I have never played on a PS*
Well, take a look at this way.
The person who bought your item with NX, if you, as one who never pays a cent on the game itself, never sold any items on the MTS (And alot more people), would that person buy the NX still?
If you think about it, the person bought the NX to buy your item. So I will disagree on what you said.

If you can create an original server backend to interact with an existing client, why not take the next step and create an original client? Heck, you do it right and you could even have your new original game run off the same account database that already exists for the MapleStory server.
Hoho, I think about this everytime! Why not spend the time if your team develops this, to develop your own game, instead of being bound to a hardcoded client, make your own, you have the power to change anything, and make anything.

Two sources down in one month. Who's next? I'm betting it will be in the next couple of weeks. I'm sure they don't want Pirates available anywhere but GMS.
P.S. Nexon is only crippling the further development of pservers, they're probably laughing their asses off at the people still running v0.55 they had 5 months ago.

Opeth isn't trolling, AT ALL, in this thread. Sure, he's done it many times, but come on. Stop getting so butthurt over trolls, especially when he isn't even trolling this thread. How are you guys that ignorant?
Many people, like myself, have always been against Private Servers. Frankly, I think they're retarded. Laws aren't meant to be broken. Yeah, I'm sure FMS was run better and even more fun than GMS at times. That's great, but that doesn't change anything. It's still a PS that has defied GMS and the law since the beginning. Goodness. There's no reason to say the crap that's been said to him when he's just sharing his opinion.
Laws are meant to be broken. In Alabama, you're not allowed to buy a sex toy for reasons other than medical. It's just so stupid it's laughable.
You should be allowed to choose the better quality product.

I wonder if those of you who argue about laws needing to be enforced have ever downloaded music, watched something illegally streamed online, or pirated software. I highly doubt you've done no such thing. Or hell, underage drinking or smoking.

Yes, I have watched something illegally online. I stand by my morals however, and buy it the day it becomes purchaseable in England.

Keep in mind programming is the, from my point of view, easiest thing to do. Graphics and sounds are the hardest/most time-consuming.

I highly doubt you've done no such thing. Or hell, underage drinking or smoking. 1) legally gray area in my country. As it stands, uploading is illegal and downloading is fine. I'm ok on that front.
2) don't bother with torrents, and you can stream pretty much any TV show from the web site of the station that shows it so there's no point in doing it illegally.
3) Made a couple of no-cd cracks for games that I legally purchased. Didn't distribute them. Not sure of the legality of that but my moral meter is fine with it I didn't steal, cause a loss of income or do anything detrimental to anyone by doing this.
4) legal age is 19 here, 18 if I go over the provincial border that is about 10 minutes away. Also, it's legal if you're on private property with parental/guardianship approval. Since my parents know I'm responsible, it's never been an issue, even when I was 15.
5) I'm not stupid and/or susceptible enough to peer pressure to even want to try smoking. It's a huge waste of money, makes you stink (particularly in winter) and, oh yeah... it eventually kills you.
Got any others? I think the worst you'll find me doing is going over the speed limit... My mom's on the federal copyright board so I've had to be aware of how far I can go because her kid breaking copyright laws in her own household wouldn't exactly look too good. Heck, on programs like Napster and Ares, I drew several happy faces in Paint, named them things that nobody would want to DL like "23jkdowtcv20.bmp" and shared those just to not be considered a leech. Since I made them, I owned the copyright on them and was therefore freely allowed to distribute them as I saw fit
The only thing I can say in this thread is the same thing I said in the Koolk thread. It sucks for him and I hope Trunks lands on his feet, but Nexon is justified in this. There's not exactly many places I'll agree with Nexon because they're generally horrible, but they're well within their rights here.

it's not that graphics/sound is hard, it's that it's hard to find artists to do it.
I know many people who are going to major in computer animation/graphics, and music in my school. (in fact there are a total of ~80 students in our school who takes the grade 12 computer animation course, and ~40 students in our school takes the grade 12 computer graphics course, and hundreds who take music courses, compare that to the 18 students in our school who takes grade 12 computer science) None of them ever thought of creating graphics/music for games. They draw or compose lots of awsome artistic stuff, but it's just for display, and to them, it's not hard at all.

Is this the last of the big private servers that's going to be hit? I've played a couple private servers, and I'd be pretty sad if they were all closed down

Not the same thing as doing sprites.
How many of them have meticulously drawn the same 70 views of a character for hundreds of different items... probably not many.

I beg to differ to a degree Fiel. A competent team of programmers with the appropriate testing team and/or test server can wipe out the latest hack effectively without affecting legitimate players.
That certainly has NOT been the case with Nexon's super dee duper glitched autoban system. And anyone who dares to say that you sometimes break a few eggs to make an omelet has no idea what good customer service is all about.
I can't speak to what Nexon likes or dislikes as I know no one at that company and all my customer service interactions have been via automated scripts or templates. In my humble opinion, relying on an autoban system to avoid having to hire real Game Masters simply shows that Nexon's doesn't get customer service. Unfortunately, there are too many young kids pouring their money or their parents' money into Nexon's coffers for my opinion to make any difference.
Frankly, Nexon and all other MMO operator will never be rid of hackers altogether. There are other ways to mitigate the risks other than an autoban system but those options tend to require more customer service on Nexon's part. (e.g. ip registration limited to a certain # of addresses, mass IP banning of known open proxy servers, convert to a subscription model, etc)
Like you said Fiel, it's just cheaper to brute force with an autoban system and hope you don't screw too many of your customers all at once. That maybe the acceptable choice for Nexon management, but it isn't for me.

Attempt at good spelling: failed
It's true, he can't code, so what? Does that mean every company's boss should have the same ability their staff does? Does the CEO of NEXON know how to code maplestory? I think not. You know nothing about companies do you?
Also, without Flowsion, all the developers that made huge things for PSes (HTPQ, BPHPQ, the D/C fix, but you probably don't know anything about this, amirite?) would have never been coded. A company cannot run if there isn't someone to give them instructions.
Also, what thrown around money? The money from the donators was used to pay for the server costs.
