really i think the idea of having an actual wedding ceremony/reception then doing the marathon should be fine for family really. i mean, you have all the formal stuff included so everyone gets their moment/memory, then you guys get to go out and have a blast doing it your way too. i say go for it!

Yeah either way works fine, get married on a formal wedding and such, then the marathon or the other way around
