(For you people that dont know, each language was really based off of one base language, which became some of the languages we know today. French/Spanish from Latin, English and the modernized German from German...etc.)
English actually is a bastardization of several of the romance languages, particularly Latin. This is due in part to the Roman campaign to control the British Isles (never completely successful, and viewed as a waste of resources by most leaders of the time). Eventually the military takeover became more of a culture infusion, with some "pagan" British culture backwashing into Roman Christianity to form most of the Christian stories and holidays.
Over time, the language grew to encompass words and ideas from other cultures, including Spanish and French. Middle Eastern ideas, while prominent after a mass migration west when (cant remember the name, but famous barbarian warlord) began terrorizing the Middle Eastern area, seem to have been incorporated through pre-existing words, and as impacted English very little (a noteworthy exception is the word "assassin" derived from "hashish," a drug used to put covert attackers into a hallucinogenic state to aid them in their mission").
