As said, from a scientific viewpoint it's to reproduce and continue the life of the species as a whole. Life for an individual is in most cases insignificant.
The only reason we think of it any differently is cause of a little intangible thing we evolved called the conscience (Not the angel and devil that tell you what to do... you guys have those too, right? But consciousness as a whole). This little thing is our drive for life when you think about it. We think about life, we think about death. Not many organisms actually THINK about death (if any). It decides how we live our life, it helps us reason with the unreasonable, tackle the unfathomable, it makes us colour inside the lines, eat food cause we want to, not just to stay alive. It makes us do good things, it makes us understand our emotions. Other organisms have build in emotions like we do, the difference is we know what they are and why they are. We see something frightening, we get scared. Animals are "programmed" to run away, yet humans actively seek out fear. We fall in love, we cry, we smile, we seek emotion.
What happens when we die? Why are we alive? There's no answer to these questions so just sit back and enjoy the ride how you see fit. You only get one ticket.
Edit: I want some people to read this. It's one of my favorite essays. I know it's long but it's quite the read.
