Umineko Fighting Game - Ougon Musoukyoku
#21
Looks pretty awesome, but I'd need to read Umineko first. Hm, this is a heads up to start for once.

Hmm...won't Battler technically be absolutely broken in this game? He has a magic resistance of "Endless Nine" after all...

Though I guess the Devs don't really care. Rolleyes

Fighting games based on series don't usually take into account the canon powerlevels of the characters. Games like Marvel vs Capcom would be completely broke-

Oh wait. Well, Sentinel wouldn't be nearly as godly in part 2 if they had him being as powerful as he is in the comics, not that it matters too much when powerlevels in western comics tend to be all over the place (not as bad as before, but heroes like Squirrel Girl makes sure to show us all that there's still an times where battles are just plain silly).

In any case, the primary focus of anyone making a fighting game based on a series shouldn't be "lets translate the characters into the game with their exact strength from the series"; but it should follow the lines of "lets see what this character can do, and see how we can incorporate it into the game while still trying to make sure they're balanced with the rest of the cast".

Of course, since I've never played this game before, I dunno if it's broken or not. Wouldn't be surprised if it was, balancing takes a while, most fighting games nowadays have balance patches thrown in every now and then to update the game based on the unbalances that players find that weren't apparent enough during the testing process to pick up.

Bern will be alright, but Lambda...how are they going to pull off her "Magic of Certainty", I wonder?

Scratch that. How the HELL are they going to pull off Bern's "Magic of Miracles"?!

Video showing Meta world counters:

If you're confused, there's an explanation on the main site about it.

In Japanese, of course.
Not gonna translate all of what it says right now. I might later if I'm not lazy and try to read it all. I'll post the gist of what's going on.

First, activating meta-field, grants the caster an ability while the field is up. It stays up for a certain amount of time. It also affects your team mates.

Basically, activating Meta costs 1 SP. I believe it says Metas can be stacked with your partner. The opponent can counter it at the cost of 2 of their SP, and reduces the amount of time the opponent's meta-field can stay up by 25%. From there, the original caster can counter-counter with 2 more SP. After, the opponent can counter-counter-counter with 3 of their SP, which will reduce the amount of time by 50%. The caster can then do one final counter, and by this point the opponent will have no more SP to counter.

In other words, it adds a bit of mind reading to the game. If you think your opponent won't find it worth it to break out of your combo, then go for it. Same goes for the other way around. If your opponent combos you, and you think they wouldn't waste their SP on finishing their combo up, then try it out. You'll also cut down the amount of time their field can be up.

Ergh, Umineko. I never really forced myself to watch the anime (although I finished Higurashi).
Looks interesting, if I ever end up watching Umineko I may give it a try.

Whole weekend has an anticlimactic ending... as I just ended up ordering it from PaletWeb while refreshing at AmiAmi. That was a waste of 45 minutes when I could have been sleeping...

In any case, January will be hella fun~

Anime wasn't so great. If you have the patience, read the VN.

On a slightly related note, EP7 is 100% translated and 50% edited. Expect a patch this week.

Pre-orders are up at AmiAmi; been up for ~20 minutes and still open, so refreshing may not have been needed...

Though I am happy that I used PaletWeb, since it would have taken another hour of waiting.

I'm playing now. Still getting used to characters, but right now I'm liking Lucifer, Siesta, and Battler.

Also, dumps of the game's data shows Bern's portrait.

Not in the game, but her portrait probably hints to her being a character included in a game update since the game has a version number on the bottom right corner of the title screen.

From what I hear, Bern was dummied out- there's definitely some data for her, including her portrait, but if you force yourself to be her... you get her portrait but end up playing as Battler.

I'm going to assume Battler is a placeholder until they add her into the game.

Edit:

Found in my own unpacking of game data, so I can verify this isn't just someone on the internet posting fake images. Here's the sprite:

Is the netplay good or is the video description accurate haha

The netplay in this is very bad at this point. Slightly laggy and dropped connections everywhere. I'm playing right now, I can sometimes get full matches with people. It varies from person to person.

I do find this game very fun to play though. So far I'm maining Lucifer, dunno who to sub though. Eva seems nice, but maybe Shannon could be my sub. I tried Ronove by accident in an online match for the first time and did very well with him, may try learning his moveset.

On another note, the specs for this game are high, the overall quality of it is high as well. The only drawback is the extremely small character list, which is disappointing with a series that has as many characters as Umineko. I'm hoping that future updates will indeed have more characters, as well as better netplay.

I also believe that with such high production quality, they've striked some deal already for this to be in Japanese arcades. It's very high quality for a oneshot doujin fighter with no plans to make it anywhere but the PC.

I checked over on some Japanese forums and such. They don't disconnect much, but they are complaining about lag. I guess my original assumption was right, this may not work too well online outside of Japan because of how shitty the infrastructure us over here. Japan has a very nice internet layout, while the US on the other hand isn't so great. I'm sure there will be a patch to smooth the lag for the Japanese players, but since they're not having too many disconnection issues, who knows if netplay will be decent outside Japan. We'll see, I'm hoping they just all around fix the netplay rather than tweaking it a bit.

Maybe we can find some way to get GGPO to work for this or something.
