Yes I can access MSN messenger, skype, oovoo, and all my other chat and vchat clients fine. Just southperry, the maple website, and gamelauncher all give me something that says "closed by a remote server" when I use Opera as my browser.

Um. How exactly do I do that?

Find cord connecting modem to router.
Unplug from router. Connect to your machine instead.
When done, unplug from your machine, plug back into router. No evidence except the rest of the house loses internet while you have it because the router's no longer getting connectivity to share.

On-topic: If the modem is set in your parents' room, you'll need quite a bit of a cord to connect your machine to it.

Not so much if it's a laptop and he can just move it in there.

Granted with 8 hours a day he could easily move the entire rig an hour after they leave and put it back an hour before they get home.

Just tried the modem thing, I got limited or no connectivity so I rebooted and still had the same thing. When I tried to repair the connection its said an error occurred when trying to renew my IP address.

Start -> Run -> cmd

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Start -> Run -> cmd

"An error occurred while renewing interface Local Are Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has been timed out."

More likely your machine is configured to explicitly refer to router as it's default gateway and needs to be adjusted to bypass it then set back.
If you go to start-> settings -> network connections -> Local area connection -> properties

Scroll the list down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties on it, record whatever it says on the first tab so you can set it back to it later, then change it to "Obtain IP Address Automatically", move to the 2nd tab and do the same if it's filled out.

Click the half dozen OK's, ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew and done.

When you need to go back to using the router re-enter the info as it was originally.

Are you certain you've plugged the ethernet connection from the modem to the PC, not the router to the PC?

This shouldn't be necessary, but also helps to verify DHCP is even running -> Start -> Run -> Services.msc

Scroll down to look for DHCP Client and ensure it's in a "Started" status.

DHCP is started, and yes I'm sure I'm connecting to the modem, I unplugged the cable that leads to my computer from my linksys router into whatever the router was plugged into. Still doesn't work though =\.

if it is 192.168.1.x, set your computer's IP to 192.168.1.60
if it is 192.168.0.x, set your computer's IP to 192.168.0.60

see if the connection can be established in this way.

once connected, open your browser, type 192.168.1.[x] on the address bar to enter the modem config page
(if it requires modem access code, it is usually labeled on the modem as well)
and set the PPPoE / DHCP location to the modem instead of the router


remember the settings so these can be reversed.

if lucky, the login info is still saved inside the modem

Unfortunately.. I can't find a label like that, my dad may have removed it but I don't know its a motorala modem and I have road runner.

The weird this is I can access the internet on my laptop when I connect through the modem but not my desktop. I'd prefer to use the desktop because my laptops ancient so I'm not sure why it doesn't work on both.
