Lets have a small Japanese lesson.

アニメ　is an imported and shortened word for Animation. It refers to animation in general, not just Japanese animation. We say cartoons, they say anime. Obviously, you all know that a cartoon doesn't necessarily mean an American cartoon.
日本のアニメ or 'Nihon no Anime" means Japanese Animation. This is used to refer to the anime you all love so much.
There can be American Anime and Korean Anime and so on; However the word is usually associated with Japan.

Any cartoon in America, regardless if it's 'anime' style or not can be refered to as anime, or アメリカのアニメ　（American Animation)

Seriously, stop with technicalities. Word origin and "correct" usage doesn't mean much when "anime" already has an accepted meaning by most people who see it. You said it yourself "usually associated" (more like completely). Anyone who is using anime to refer to animation in general is an idiot. Or trying to troll people. If you're going to use it like that, you're going to have to specify. American anime (lol), etc. And even then people are still going to be picturing Japanese style animation because that's just the connotation of the word.

If you want to get into specifics, Korean 'animation' is considered as 'anime'. I don't think it's because of the fact that they're all Asians either. Just how the art-style is drawn that depicts what is and what is not an anime.

Edit: After looking up other websites, and forums. I have come to one conclusion. There is no correct answer, just a more used-definition. The one most people are accustomed and more hard-headed with would be an Otaku's definition of the word 'anime'. I watch anime, myself, but not as much as most of you here, I'm sure. Mostly gamerz.

She's supposed to be black? I took her as more of a darker skin Latino. Then again, in Brazil it's pretty easy to be born from a huge jumble of an ethnic background.

Well, she's certainly dark skinned. It takes place in Brazil, so I wouldn't doubt that she's dark skinned Latino, but i always just classified her as Black. The Japanese call her Black as well, but I doubt they'd really care about how she may be technically Latino.

And yeah, it was pretty underated. It wasn't bad, but I felt that it didn't particularly stand out too much. Didn't care much for the ending, but it was an interesting watch.

I watched it all at once a little after it finished airing. I liked the music, I really liked the scenery, the pacing got a little lazy for my taste for a few too many episodes at a time. But it totally deserves more than the collective "Meh" it seems to have gotten. That being said, I'll probably have drowned it out of my mind completely within a few years, and I can't say I'm interested in seeing it twice.

I took a good "integrated arts and humanities" (bullshit category. Prof taught a class about the Age of Exploration with a particular hardon for the Portuguese) last semester and had to read a few articles on Brazilian race relations. Interesting stuff. They went for a "let's pump the bloodlines with as much white blood as possible" strategy as opposed to our supremacy methods.

Correct. 変態 is usually used for pervert (it does have other meanings as well, like transforming and such); Japanese people don't use this word to refer to adult animation and comics. Yet we use this word in English, and you obviously know what it's referring to. In this case, the original meaning of this word in its original language has been lost somewhere along the lines, and the word means something different for us.

You're right, アニメ is simply "animation" in Japanese, but we have a word for that in English. So why use this word? Because we don't use it in the same way. It means something different to us (though in this case it's more related to what the word originally means).

Just like hentai, anime has spawned a meaning of its own to us.
