Goodbye Terraria, Hello Starbound!

Redigit Wrote:The future of Terraria has been highly debated as of late, not just with the community, but for us as well. The last year has been a crazy ride! When I started on this game, I just had a few ideas of what I thought would make a fun game. I had no idea that it would receive so much attention. I want to thank all of you for supporting us and making this game's success possible.

After a lot of internal debate, we have decided that it is time to move on. My wife and I are due to have another boy soon, and I want to spend some time getting to know him. I also want to spend the time recharging and bettering myself as both a programmer and game designer. I have learned a lot from working on Terraria and plan on using what I've learned, building upon it, and moving forward with another, even better project. However, we are still planning at least one more bug fix for Terraria.

For those that haven't already heard, Finn "Tiy" Brice has moved on to form Chucklefish and is heavily at work on an exciting new game called “Starbound”. It's looking to be a lot of fun, so make sure to check it out if you haven't already!

Thanks again for all your support, and I am very much looking forward to providing you with something much better than Terraria in the future!

While I'm sad that the team is going to stop development, I wish them good luck in their future endeavours.
For a while I've been following Tiyuri's Twitter, he's the graphics dev of Terraria but also the creator of his own game called Starbound.

I'm really excited for Starbound. If you haven't checked out their website, do it now!

Oh, that's a massive shame, I only just started playing Terraria recently and was excited about what the next patch might bring.

That said, Starbound sounds pretty damn awesome, gonna be keeping my eye on that.

Terraria discussion thread - FenixR - 2012-02-21

Dang thats a sad thing. Too bad the game isnt open source or moddeable, you could get more life out of the game that way when the devs decided that is time to move on.

What the what. They just got Terraria into physical release...

Terraria discussion thread - Raph589 - 2012-02-21

What the hell. All the stuff they could've made with this game.. Wow...

Terraria discussion thread - Dark Link - 2012-02-21

I can't say I'm pretty damn frustrated...
I was anxiously awaiting 1.2 and beyond, but I have this feeling like they just didn't care about the game anymore so they dropped it.

Regardless, Starbound has got me pretty excited, it's like Terraria 2.0.

Yeah. It looks pretty neat. But please make us able to dig and build, not just explore and kills monsters...

pomegranate, this isn't the news I wanted to see about the game. Sad to see it go as it was my indie game of '11.

Starbound however... looks very very promising. Can't wait for that one.

Terraria discussion thread - raizoo - 2012-02-21

dat guy has quite the butt.

Terraria discussion thread - 案山子 - 2012-02-21

pineapple, man, and no way for us to let the game live on a bit longer.
Terraria's modding community is almost nonexistent, and the ones there are are almost all glitchy as hell, or add nothing noteworthy to the game.

RIP Terraria. Frown

I'll be supporting Tiy and his new game though.

Terraria discussion thread - Dark Link - 2012-02-22

inb4 this topic becomes "Starbound". The one thing I like about Starbound is the "Increased difficulty in Multiplayer"

Terraria discussion thread - FenixR - 2012-02-22

I could totally see Starbound as a Terraria v2.0.

And it seems it goes beyond the "Dig and Build" too.

Terraria discussion thread - Spadow - 2012-02-22

Starbound is more than just Terraria. According to Tiy:

Quote:It's a mixture of some of my favourite concepts. Diablo, Borderlands, Terraria, Pokemon, Castlevania, Metroid. + Stuff no one has done before!

Tentacle Planet looks awesome:

Gaslamp Games (Dungeons of Dredmor) offers Re-Logic to continue support for Terraria!

Quote:@Demilogic @Terraria_Logic So! Any interest in having us take over Terraria support for you guys? We're perfectly serious.

Honestly, I REALLY want this to happen!

Terraria discussion thread - Razmos - 2012-02-24

Oooh, thats promising, i didn't even think about that.

A different company could also spell new and different things for the game, so i'm all for it.

Its just a matter of Re-Logic to also be "all for it". Remember that if they pass control to another group, they will have to give them part of the earnings to the new group (Unless they are doing for the heck of it, but i doubt it).

I think they would be for it if it means the game can continue receiving updates. The more that's added to the game, the more people buy it and the more money they receive, so i think it would be better for them to let Terraria continue.

Terraria discussion thread - FenixR - 2012-02-24

There are other factors that Re-Logic will also have to take into account to decide whenever or not to let these guys to take the creative control of their game, its not such a easy thing to decide.

But well, one can hope.
