I wouldn't go as far as to say it's making proper use of the magic formula simply because the things that add to base damage are still only skills and equipment adds the near equivilent of dex, luk, or str for other classes. Meaning for example that a decent 4th job mage might outdo a decent 4th job other class in single target DPS, but an extremely well-equipped mage would still get very much outdone by an extremely well-equipped 4th job class that was previously being outdone. Having damage-modifying skills doesn't change skillpoints isn't very different from increasing the base attack of skills, no amount of mesos or nx will ever improve those base values.
