Ok, I was a little vague, I mean producing ethanol from corn (maize). Sugar cane is over 5 times as efficient. Of course, it's not as well suited to cooler climates, but that 500% difference is the reason that Brazil can produce ethanol from sugarcane, and turn a profit, while America struggles with subsidies (and a heavy tariff on Brazilian imports to block them from entering the market in a big way - basically it costs 22 cents per litre to produce in Brazil, 33 cents per litre in America, but the tariff adds 14 cents per litre so it costs more to get it from Brazil) to keep the corn based ethanol industry running.

Ethanol takes a lot more energy and money to produce than plain gasoline. Using corn makes products related to corn go up as well (i.e. when a farmer uses corn to feed his beef cows/milk cows, the cost of ALL milk related products goes up as well as corn-fed beef). If people find a way to make use of mass producing some random weed in the ground (like dandelions) then we just might have a solution.
Hybrid vehicles just don't seem very beneficial to me... Right now of course. perhaps in the future when all the people browsing at this very moment turn 50 we will finally have a solution =P
electric cars aren't major improvements either. you charge your car in the garage from a wall socket, but that electricity comes from an energy source that's just as bad as gasoline. So no benefits there... Also bad that you can lose a charge and can't really go anywhere without the risk of failing to recharge.... but i guess you can use your neighbors electric sockets too =P
Hydrogen isn't effective at this moment. It's a little too hard to "mine" that hydrogen.
not to many hydrogen fuel stations also...
As of right now, nothing is more efficient to produce/ use than natural oil from the ground. I'm all for new technology and stuff to eliminate the dependence on the oil, but the invention of a new substance that is both efficient to make as well as good for the enviornment is quite hard.
I dunno, it seems to me you left out compressed air-powered vehicles.
I think it's easier to get your hands on then raw oil.

We need to work on these new energy sources anyway, before we get royally buttraped when we finally run out of gasoline. Better to make them mainstream now before they are needed on a large scale than later when theres no time to develop them.

It actually doesn't kill the battery, b/c if u read on it says at optimal performance its converting the energy to the turning of the wheels at 95% productivity or something, and barely changes if its at its peak performance(not sure real numbers and don't want to look at it right now). Its a very impressive design.

it takes like 4 football fields of corn and then some gasoline to make ethanol fuel .
those things dont come cheap and it certainly wasnt made to be the long term solution.

I never thought ethanol was very effiecent, and there's proof. I don't think ethanol will be running our cars anytime soon. Like I said, I'm hooping for more information on fuel cells and mass marketing them.

Ethanol, is actual worse, the process to actually create ethanol just pollutes the air, maing it a stupid use if your a "LETS SAVE THE PLANET" person.
The air car starts burning fuel after 35 MPH, which makes it pointless if your going on the highway anytime soon.
The electric car is win though

there are drawbacks to every alternative, but some are better than others.
electric cars needs to be recharged too often. ethanol uses up more resource than gasoline. hybrid cars still use gasoline.
people seem to forget that bio-disel is an alternative fuel source too. bio-disel is recycled oil used by restaurants and such. all it takes is some time to filter it out and it works just like normal disel would. Disel cars get alot better gas milage compare to gasoline powered cars.

Just replace all existing highways with strong elektro magnetiks and then use a pole reversing technology to pull/push the vehicle at amazing speeds and reverse poles to slam the car to the ground.
