On that mushroom with the panlids face.. those swirls.. what are they called? I've seen them in Japanese culture but could never figure out what they are.

It's pretty sad, disturbing, and yet hilarious when you think about it now and how little we knew about the mechanics back then.
It was the only Mage-usable shield in the game (Maybe Bandit too, but I don't remember for them). People wanted them SIMPLY for the defense, and the 8 Defense Pan Lids were WORTHLESS while the 12 Defense ones were like a perfectly scrolled item to people.
Look back at that...and then realize now that...It meant practically nothing at all, especially at such a small amount! You couldn't get Max Defense like you can now, and 8-12 Defense had no chance of helping in any way. Yet they were worth so much to people.

Wait stolen fences weren't in the game in the beginning?

It wasn't as valuable because it was sold at Lith Harbor mainly and pan lids are pro.

Pan Lids were the end-game shield unless you were a Warrior. Finding one meant that you were 1/3rd of your way towards becoming a millionare in Maple. Of course, things changed with Ludi when Wristguards and Esther Shields came out for Bandits and Mages.

Yeah, I also remember scrolling my gear with DEF back then. DEF was actually pretty useful for low levels (like, below 70) pre-BB.

I was at 40 base dex + tons of dex and acc from equips, but couldn't hit many things, so raised my dex by 20 more by lvl 80 on my sader.. so 60 base dex
