Who's Valarius?
Posted by: Valarius - 2008-07-07, 11:20 AM - Forum: Amherst - Replies (6)

Hello to everybody on southperry.net. This site is the greatest.

With that aside:
Hello!

My screenname is Valarius, and i'm an avid Maplestory player, and well-rounded forum addict. I enjoy long walks on the beach, and sexy latinas in my be-

.. woops, not personals. D:

Hey, my name is Quinton [however, people tend to call me Q or Quin], and i'm your average 17 year old. I graduated from high school this year, and have been accepted into college. I'm currently working as a childrens day camp councellor, and it's pretty cool so far.

My hobbies include Maplestory [obviouslylol, maplestory forum], graphic design, and web design. I've been playing Maplestory for a long time, and I started out in jMS.

I have since retired from jMS [142 Night Lord] due to the IP block, and due to VPNs always being slow for me. My current character is Phenominae, a level 95 sniper on Khaini.

My graphic and web design experience throws back about 7 years, when I was 10 years old. I was always interested in art and the like, and making designs in my spare time has since escalated into what I hope to be my career; my college major is Graphic Design, and i'm minoring in Web Design.

I also play for Major League Gaming, a nationwide effort to bring together the best gamers from the United States, playing Gears of War.

Here's to hoping you've all learned at least a little about me, and i'm sorry for the late introduction!

Yours,
Q

I'm surprised nobody has made a thread about this movie yet. I saw it on Friday, and it was great. At first I thought it'd be just another one of those same-old plot superhero movies, but the "Not your average superhero" slogan they created fits really well. It had the action, suspense, comedy, gigantic twist; most of what a good movie contains.

Have you seen it? If you have, how did you like it? And if you haven't, do you want to?

Remember to keep comments involving important parts of the movie in spoiler tags. :<

  VMware and MapleStory: How To
Posted by: doctorx - 2008-07-07, 08:55 AM - Forum: Technical Help - Replies (13)

For starters... a bit of background information...

VMware Workstation (from Wikipedia.org): VMware Workstation is a virtual machine software suite for x86 and x86-64 computers from VMware, a division of EMC Corporation. This software suite allows users to set up multiple x86 and x86-64 virtual computers and to use one or more of these virtual machines simultaneously with the hosting operating system. Each virtual machine instance can execute its own guest operating system, such as Windows, Linux, BSD variants, or others. In simple terms, VMware Workstation allows one physical machine to run multiple operating systems simultaneously.

MapleStory (from Wikipedia.org): MapleStory is a free-of-charge, 2D, side-scrolling Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game developed by the South Korean company Wizet. Several versions of the game are available for specific countries or regions, and each is published by various companies such as Wizet and Nexon. Although playing the game is free, many player appearances and gameplay enhancements can be purchased from the "Cash Shop" using real money. MapleStory has a combined total of over 50 million subscriber accounts in all of its versions. MapleStory North America (Global), for players mainly in North America and outside of East Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe, has over three million players.

Now on to the main subject...

I decided to take some time and do some research about the possibility to have multiple "legit" MapleStory applications running simultaneously, on one physical machine. Of course, there are hacks to do that, but, I'm no sponsor of them. So, this topic is not about hacking MapleStory to open several instances at once. I am gonna post about how virtualization can give you more legit advantages for your own educational purposes.

I work with a local company that gives services at enterprise level. We provide server and network configuration, migration, and virtualization, among other things. So, based off the experience I have gained at work, I decided to practice some at home. Recently, I build a new computer setup.

I'm showing off my rig so you can use it as a reference for mileage comparison
Motherboard: Intel DX48BT2
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 GHz (Overclocked to 3.0 GHz)
RAM: 4 GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHz (Dual Channel)
HDD: Hitachi 320 GB 7200 RPM SATA-II
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 3870 PCI Express 2.0
OS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP2

MapleStory uses very, very few resources of this computer, thus giving me a fair advantage here for what I wanted to do.

I did some research about Direct3D compatibility inside a virtual "guest" operating system environment and, VMware 6.x has experimental support for Direct3D, making it my first (and, so far, the only) option for what I wanted to do. I know that there are other virtualization/emulation programs with Direct3D support but, being VMware what I'm most used to work with, it became my first choice.

I grabbed a copy of VMware Workstation 6.0.4 (latest build) and installed it in this computer. Now, once installed, you'll need to install a new virtual machine (duh!) and, the OS I used is Windows XP Professional Edition SP3 (32 bit). I reserved 512 MB of physical RAM to the virtual machine, since MapleStory does take a big chunk of RAM. I decided to tweak the legit retail disk using nLite. nLite is a customizing application for Windows XP retail discs allowing you to delete unnecessary setup software, and to add drivers for your devices, so you can create a copy of your Windows XP retail disc with all of your drivers included. This greatly reduces time to reinstall Windows by having all of the drivers and apps already installed and customized in one step. So, I took my copy and removed pretty much all of the unnecessary crap but, left DirectX 9.0c, as it is required for Direct3D to work.

Once you have your cleaned XP installation disc, use it to install XP in your virtual machine. Voila! Now you have your first "guest" OS installed. Use Windows Update and update everything, install VMware Tools, and set up anything else you need. Now, by default, you can't run Direct3D applications. To enable Direct3D application support, you must manually edit the *.vmx from your virtual machine to add Direct3D support lines. Once set, Power Up the virtual machine and, if you haven't already, copy your Nexon/MapleStory folder over to the virtual machine's HD by drag and dropping onto the guest VM window. Now, you should be able to play MapleStory on your virtual machine. If you got a computer build similar to my specs, you can even clone that virtual machine, so you can have a 2nd virtual machine that will also have Direct3D support and can be running simultaneously with all other virtual machines running. So far, I only cloned the virtual machine once, and with both VMs running MapleStory, including the host PC MapleStory (making it 3 MapleStorys running at the same time), I still am running at 50%~60% of total CPU usage, and 2.2 GB of RAM consumed. I can probably make a 3rd VM and launch MapleStory and run the 4 of them, including the host PC MS, at full speed.

So, you might be wondering, what's the point of this? Well, it's basically for my own practicing. I wanted to get the most of my new PC, so I started thinking ways to do it, and this was one of them. And, yes, I used to have 2 PCs, and one of them was my HB mule, and sometimes my FM mule. But now, with VMware, you can do it all with one physical PC, assuming yours has enough horsepower to load virtual machines without lagging your host application.

Advantages? Less power consumption (you're only using ONE PC). Less space occupied in your room with multiple physical PCs (again, you're only using ONE PC). Less real-world money waste (Building a good/decent computer is cheaper/faster/better than building 2 POS PCs). It's legal (you're not hacking, you're using several virtual PCs, which is legit).

Computer going slow? Heres some tips!
Posted by: LolPirate - 2008-07-07, 05:51 AM - Forum: Technical Help - Replies (6)

Hello there!

Before i got my new laptop i constantly lagged and it would anger me.

xD

Heres some of the stuff i regularly do to ensure I dont get a slow

laptop.

To begin with

First of all go here to download CCleaner

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Then open it and it will bring up a list of various items on your

computer. Check the ones you want gone and once your done click

analyze. It should bring up a list of many files. Look through them to

make sure you arnt deleting anything important. Click Run cleaner and

it will begin cleaning.

Moving on

Now your computer has come with a disk cleanup already installed.

You can find it by clicking start (xp) or the orb (vista)then go to

accessories and click system tools and it should be there. Open it and

click the "C" drive. Tick all the boxes and click Ok. This WONT delete

any text files/pictures.

Disk Defrag time!

Well computers also come with a disk defragmenter installed also. You

can find it in the same place as the Disk Cleanup. But mine doesnt

work for some reason so i use Auslogics disk defrag which you can

get here
http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/dis...g/download Open it click Ok on the "C" drive and just wait for it to

finish. Once its done click Ok and your finished defragmenting.o

Hot Laptop?
Im not clear on this but ive noticed when my laptop gets hot it tends to

slow down. For laptop users you might want to get a laptop cooler or

jus shut the computer off for a bit xD.

Ill post more tips later

  Ultimate Dexless Infighter Equips Guide
Posted by: Sn1perJohnE - 2008-07-07, 05:43 AM - Forum: Pirate - Replies (39)

Not quite a guide but rather an outline but still. This shows the easiest (in my mind) way to be dexless and still able to equip the current LVL knuckle and so forth.

 LVL 20

 LVL 25

 LVL 30

 LVL 35 + 40

 LVL 50-60

 LVL 70+

 Maker Addition

Maple Knuckle Build
I'll skip the spoilers, this is pretty straight forward enough.

LVL 10-60+
Up until LVL 20, you will be able to move along to the current LVL Knuckle, as well as overall and any other job specific equips. Once past LVL 20 though, you cannot equip any higher equips, unless you scroll your overall with Dex. To last until the first maple knuckle at LVL 35, 100%ing the LVL 20 overall, or even a bathrobe will be enough to equip the LVL 30 knuckle. One major benefit to using maple knuckles is the fact that being dexless, you may have some minor issues with ACC. Similar to dexless warriors, the lack of Dex becomes a small problem in higher LVLs when trying to hit stronger monsters. The maple knuckles give a 10 ACC boost for each LVL of knuckle. This build should still need the Dex equips to be able to equip at least the LVL 60 overall. But because you are able to get an ACC boost from the maple knuckles, you scroll the overall for Str, giving yet another major increase to attack. Another good thing about this build, is that it is very easy to switch back to the normal dexless build, just by simply scrolling another overall for Dex and using the highest LVL knuckle you are able to equip.

Edit: I am now assuming this guide/outline as final, but if there is some update down the road that requires a fine tuning of this, then I'll tackle it when it comes.

What're ya'll up to, gaming wise?
Posted by: Porphion - 2008-07-07, 05:12 AM - Forum: General Gaming - Replies (35)

Well, first off, I wasn't sure whether to throw this into PC gaming or console gaming. I figured console, as ROMs and the like can be included in the section. A mod may feel free to move it wherever they see fit if need be.

I think the title speaks for itself fairly well. Just post whatever games you're playing at the moment, maybe a couple lines about the game or why you like it, etc.

Right now I'm working my way through Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth(Hard mode) on my PSP. You have no idea how annoying it is having every character starting at level one.

I've been wondering what games SP's been playing, especially the hard ones. Probably the hardest game I've ever played is the Touhou bullet hell shooter series.

30k on gach
10k trying to get a certain hairstyle

And then I plan to use the rest on MTS to make equips. I want to make;

6 Atk or higher glove
5 Dex or higher earrings
6 Dex or higher PAC probably 1 or 2 ATK)
15 Dex or higher Sauna/Bathrobe

I'm just wondering what would be cheaper to try for first?
