Underappreciated great games
#1
So this came from a mention of Legend of the Dragoon in another thread, what are some great games that deserved sequels but didnt get them, or great games that are just fairly unknown?

Heres a few of my favorite games that never hit it big enough.

Jet Set Radio Future/Jet Grind Radio

Skies of Arcadia

Golden Sun is one of them for sure.

Other games would have to be, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, and Silent Bomber.

There are a lot more out there, but these are the only ones that I have in my mind at the moment.

Really? I thought Golden Sun did pretty well, it has quite a following, I wouldnt really call it underappreciated, its got a sequel, and another in the works, and Isaac and Felix were both in huge demand as Brawl characters, though Sakurai in all his wisdom made Isaac an assist ._.

This is why I said Golden Sun.

While, yes, it did get one sequel. But, the game just calls out for more to be added.

Golden Sun was a good game for a Game-boy release. If I played it on a console, like PS1, then the story would definitely need be a little more complicated. Additionally, Golden Sun was highly appreciated and anticipated. A wide majority of people know about the game which makes it a popular game and therefore doesn't make the game "under-appreciated" which this thread is intended for.

Skies of Arcadia felt very "block-ish" for me. The camera angles sometimes gave me a headache and made it difficult for me to find all the treasure chests before I could progress. My younger sister is really into it though after I bought it like a year and a half ago.

I think Xenogears could be considered pseudo-mainstream since a lot of players who bought Xenosaga played or went to play Xenogears afterwards. I think Vagrant Story was definitely a sleeper RPG.

I kind of liked "Parasite Eve" and "Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon 64." Parasite Eve was just really freaking scary when I played it. And Goemon felt like I was fully immersed within the game. The game really got amazing at the end with all the various ways to explore the same areas and it was one of those rare games I ended up playing twice.

Mischief Makers. Very epic 2-D Platformer puzzle N64 title by Treasure and Enix. Your main way of attacking is by grabbing, shaking, catching, and throwing. Story was pretty entertaining, in my opinion, but the game was kind of short as well. Very underrated game, though. Here's a boss video:

Terranigma! Now there's a game for the SNES that has long been forgotten by time, the main problem being how it was release, or how it wasn't released I should say.

I only got this game a little while ago when I was at a garage sale (at which I also got a few other older games, but this one is my favorite out of them for sure) and it just blew me away.

For as long as I can remember since I played them, and no matter how many other SNES games I played through two games that have always held a top spot on my lists. FF6 and CT, CT claiming the top spot when it comes to music alone. And while other games came close (FF4/5, Earthbound, Illusion of Gaia, Lufia, E.V.O. Search for Eden only to name only a few) they couldn't take them down.

Until I played this game, right off the bat the music was wonderful being a good sign since even if a game is "bad" I can enjoy playing it if the music is good. Lucky for me I wouldn't have to worry about the game being "bad".

Such a great story, a fun battle system, and absolutely beautiful music, what more can you ask for in a game?

This game is now at the top of my list when it comes to SNES games, and amongst the top in overall games.

And unless there is another almost completely unknown SNES game with all these things and more it won't ever fall from my top lists when it comes to SNES games.

Don't know in the USA, but Shining Force for Sega Genesis was kinda underrated.

One of the best MegaDrive games ever!

Legend of Dragoon, of course. Wish there was a sequel. ;/ I can't think of any others from the top of my head right now, because most of the ones I played had a sequel or a continuation.

Secret of Evermore is one of my all time favourite games. I cant understand why it was such a commercial failure.

Wow skies of arcadia I loved that game so much. Always whispers about a sequel but they never materialise into anything. At least Vyse got a cameo in Valkyria Chronicles I guess.
I was gutted when I found out pirates used knuckles/guns and not a cutlass. I wanted to run around MS shouting Cutlass Fury!

I am offended this thread got this far without mentioning okami.

Also, the world ends with you. Seriously, both those games had everything to easily be multi million sellers except goddam advertising. Stupid companies wonder why TWEWY sold only 20k copies in europe by september? BECAUSE NO ONE HAS HEARD OF IT YOU MORONS. GET SOME TV TIME FOR YOUR BRAND NEW SUPER FUN, ORIGINAL GAMES AND MAKE YOURSELF RICH.

AND SERIOUSLY CAPCOM? ONLINE ONLY ADS FOR (wii version of) OKAMI? RAGE.

Lol I was going to post Okami and GodHand in my initial post, but I didnt want to drag it out, both were made by Clover studios, and while they were both great (and very different from each other), they didnt do very good initially, despite Okami's rave reviews. Colver studios eventually had to close down, and Okami got ported to Wii, under a different company that I think bought out Clover.

Okami was pretty amazing.
Godhand was an old school arcade beat-em-up but got horrible reviews despite being very fun =(.

Also, Castle Crashers.

The most underappreciated game I've played is probably Lost Odyssey. The people who play it usually love it... just it's not really THAT popular. The best JRPG on the 360, (hell, maybe this generation) in my opinion.

I don't usually play underappreciated games... maybe GRAW 2? I don't know. I can't remember a lot of games from my early childhood.

Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1. I loved the storyline, the gameplay (strategy freak here, at least for the story battles) and the overall feel. :| I picked up my first copy at a ToysRUs closing a year before the PS3 came out. (Why the heck did they still have one? o_o)

I feel as if it's underappreciated although it got pretty good ratings. :|
