Only problem I have with the left side ad is that it pushes everything to the side, which makes me scroll to the right every time I load a page. Mildly annoying, but I can deal with it. Interstitial are more disruptive overall.
Interstitial would be like like before loading the next page you have to pass through a redirect page with an ad?
Google answered me. Both are very very annoying for different reasons.
I wouldn't mind left side ads outside of threads, but I don't think you'd have an option like that.

It not just pushes everything to the right, it completely screws up the page width. Even just the text part is often wider than my window, so I have to keep scrolling right AND left to be able to read. At least interstitial would be a single click between pages, not a continuous annoyance while trying to read a page.

Plus the whole issue with images not scaling(on the MS2 thread an oversized image had me scrolling side to side to be able to see what I was writing).

What browser are you using? I don't get any overflow problem in Chrome. Everything is scaling fine for me. This is the smallest I can make the page before it stops scaling.

Speaking of AdSense, how are their restrictions/regulation in terms of content on a site placed by other advertisers? I ask because you might get a letter if certain "Onigiri" MMORPG ads come up on the sidebar while an inspector(?) or over-zealous reporter was around.
I'm getting the image scaling thing in Chrome too.
Threads without images work fine, but as soon as someone posts an image the entire page just gets stretched out.
Zelkova's image, for example, just destroyed this thread.
