Flamethrower verse Gaviota
#1
Now that we have a lot of Outlaws and Corsairs, and I was wondering on your thoughts about the 3rd job Flamethrower verse Gaviota builds.

From what I understand, Flamethrower is very useful in 3rd job however it is not that important in 4th job.

But is it correct that this also applies to Gaviota? The skill only needs 15 skill points and then it can get replaced by Air Strike in 4th job completely?

I'm not really sure, I am looking for someone to shed light on the issue. Also one more small question. Ice Splitter only freezes for 2 seconds regardless of level until amp mastery?

Thanks for responses.

Gaviota and Air Strike are completely different. Gaviota's a summon. It attacks once and vanishes, which means you have to recast it every attack. It's barely as powerful as Burst Fire so it's not really much of a help in my opinion.

Then again, Flamethrower is one of an Outlaw's only non-spammable moves (the other being Ice Splitter) and it's very weak relative to other mobber classes' skills such as Avenger and Arrow Rain.

Neither one is a very core skill. I'd say Flamethrower's less useless though, because it gets improved upon by Elemental Boost.

Gaviota sucks. End of story.

Flamethrower is useless without blaze capsules, and in bera they are rare. Having maxed FT myself, I wish i had maxed Gaviota as when you macro it to Air Strike it has the same cooldown.

FT is only spammable with ice splitter and using FT cancels the freeze of IS.
Torpedo replaces the power of the FT+IS combo instantly at lvl 1.

It's not always about damage, goddammit. >_>

I maxed Gaviota and I can say that it's not very useful. Sure, I use it with my Octopus + Gaviota macro or Air Strike + Gaviota macro. However, outside of that I barely use it. The difference between level 15 and 30 in terms of damage is barely noticeable. If I recall correctly, I did about 5k with level 15 and 7k with level 30.

The reason I maxed it was because I don't intend on wasting USE space for capsules for Flamethrower/Ice Splitter because I want to use Ciders while training. I also think that the slots used by the Capsules are better spent for regular bullets because they're used much more often. Basically, I maxed Gaviota because that's a skill I'll at least use sometimes, whereas Flamethrower wouldn't have been on my keyboard whether I maxed it or not. Plus, Battleship Torpedo is significantly stronger and I've managed to keep my ship alive for quite some time at level 120, where it only has 4k hp. Thus, I don't think I'll be in many situations where I'd require Flamethrower over Torpedo.

If I were to remake my Pirate, I probably would max Flamethrower over Gaviota just to have a bit more training/mobbing options. Either way, I don't intend on maxing Hypnotize in 4th job so I'll just max Flamethrower with Hypnotize SP.

Winry (<3) basically covered everything else I wanted to say.

They both suck really. But 15 vs 30 gaviota isn't much difference while 11 vs 30 FT is a big difference.

if you want to train at himes using a mob attack in 10x-11x, you might as well get flamethrower, but in my opinion gaviota is more useful overall. you can use it in any situation & you can use it without stopping your triple firing. to get the best EXP possible throughout third and fourth job combined, I would suggest maxing gaviota.

For 4th, I only use

- Canon
- Ship
- Recoil to move if i'm skele
- Ice
- Rapid fire if ship breaks

I never use anything else consistently. Since i have no skill that can be used in mid air now (Removed burst fire from key set up and ice splitter doesn't do much), i have homing as a finisher for minimal health. Works pretty well if I use it and go on ship for a new monster or recoil to the next

Granted, i have no exp in 3rd job as i leeched but for 4th, there's not much purpose for it imo. Even octo is annoying sometimes in skeles as it aggros something across the screen and when i finish a mob, a skele comes towards me and starts hitting me, causing me a lot of problems if i'm being attacked from both sides.

If you know how to use your skills correctly as a Gunslinger, you can produce big damage.

I ksed a lvl 120 and lvl 140 NL at newties while sniping, by just using Burst Fire, Octopus Summon and Gaviota correctly.

It's all about timing. Summon Octopus, wait 10 seconds, Summon another, wait 20 seconds- Rinse and Repeat.

Inbetween you will be using Gaviota (summon once both newties are killed.) Once the newties spawn, Gaviota will bomb them right away. This will allow you to get in extra damage while they are not even summoned.

And of course, you will use Burst Fire as your main attack.

Flame Thrower- Useless.

What high level monsters would you be able to use this effectively on?

None that you can't already do that same damage to w/ Ice Splitter. And Ice Splitter freezes them which is more helpful.

I would rather have Gaviota. Just learn how to use your skills and make the best of them.

Those.

Uh, what? Flame thrower is 30% stronger than max cooling, and i don't know about anyone who maxed cooling.

In the end, you will be at newties longer then you will be at himes.

So, you'll be missing out on using Gaviota at newties. Even though you won't use it as much.

You aren't going to max Ice Splitter? o.O

Why would you? I assume it's the same as a Sniper's Blizzard, not so useful for damage, just for freezing.

Yea, 26 is the min level for ice. Anything else is just extra damage.

And in the long run, like i said i never use gaviota/FT at 12x/13x and i don't see me using it anytime soon. So rather I went with what skill levels is best for the skill meaning...

15 vs 30 gaviota is only an increase in damage and that increase is not significant compred to later skills

11 vs 30 FT is an increase in damage, more burn per second [i believe], and hits more monsters

The gain from a max FT compared to X FT is much better than the gain received from gaviota.

Since 4th job, I just took Gaviota off my keys. I barely used it at all, and in the training I'm in now, where everything is 2-3 hits with cannon, octopi is just enough to to force a two. I never really use FT for normal training, but I still like the option. It's proven it's worth a few times as well when I'm just fucking around. Who knows, one day it might be really useful in new places.

Go with Gaviota if you don't think you'll ever hit 4th.

I dunno about the respective merits of each, but I have to say, at level 84 without a decent mobbing skill, I am determined to max Flamethrower instead of Gaviota.

I took invis off a long time ago but my only mob skill i have is really torpedo. Ice splitter is weak so i end up using canon for mobs sometimes.

Not sure how exactly corsairs are supposed to fend off mobs when their ship is broke. Luckily mine doesn't break that often anymore, usually due to skeles spawning on me in parties.
