Question about EStaves and Anvils

My friend is telling me that using an Anvil to turn an EStaff into something else causes it to lose its elemental properties, since he supposedly no longer has the damage cut on his Bishop while using it.

Is this true, and did I end up unintentionally nerfing mine by Anviling it?
