That is probably a good assumption for some of the population, but there are definitely a good amount that do go out on the weekends, myself included.

I don't understand the disappointment in the scheduling of this 2x when it starts at the same yesterday's unscheduled maintenance did, which is a perfectly reasonable decision to make on their part. The fact that the compensation is on a Friday is just a coincidence.

Can you get anything good from the new years boxes? I opened a ton of them and got only random pots and trait boosts.

There are four new perm chairs that you can get from New Year's Gift Box 1 that drops from mobs, as well as a 30-day mount coupon, aside from the dragon earrings/earring scrolls.
The only noteworthy things from New Year's Gift Box 2 (different box that you get from defeating the dragon or other quest rewards) are secret recipes (random recipe for your profession), and maybe the new year's buff. Other than those it's pots/trait boosts/waist warmers.

These were there right after the patch, not the maintenance. I had all 4 within 24 hours after the patch.
