Questions about Gold Hammers

Hi all. So I used one of the 50% hammers from hot day and of course it failed. I was wondering, since it failed can I use a 100% hammer on the same equip? Or does it always have to be 1 golden hammer and 1 vicious hammer? Also, can I get that slot back with clean slates? Thanks in advance.
