Trouble booting up Sony VAIO

Okay. My Sony VAIO VPCS117GG is having issues booting. When I hit the power switch, the green power light (and the orange "charging" light) come on...then disappear immediately. Following that, they keep coming on and disappearing repeatedly, as if the laptop is trying to turn itself on but failing every time. Some times, the Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights do manage to flash (indicating the laptop is starting to boot) but the problem ends up persisting anyway.

Managed to get it to boot somehow yesterday after about 10 minutes of waiting, but today it's been over two hours since I hit the button and it's still attempting to boot.

It has nothing to do with the battery, since I've tried removing the battery before hitting the power button (with the laptop plugged in to a power source), to no avail. I don't think it's a virus, but if it ever does boot up again I'm gonna run every antivirus I have as well as the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Probably won't send it in for repairs if it's required, seeing as it probably won't be worth it. Anyway, tried opening it up earlier but the case wouldn't come off for some reason. Must have a hidden screw somewhere. Besides, it's been around 1.5 years (maybe even more) since I bought it, so it's about time to get a new one I guess. If such a need does arise, how do I transfer the data inside without booting it up?

p.s. I suspect something inside the power switch must've gotten jammed. Either that, or a fuse inside my VAIO blew.

I had this problem with my VAIO as well but i manged to fix it by reinstalling the OS. Turns out my vaio had crashed multiple times (due to low battery and charger not fitting 100%). The crashing resulted in the computer attempting to boot up but would instead sit at a black screen without doing anything. I don't know if yours is doing the same thing but the problem sounds similar. Can you get to the Ms-Dos boot mode? or the Sony recovery system at all (Click F10 during bootup)?

It finally managed to boot. I'll try getting to the recovery system after I'm done scanning for viruses and backing up my data.

Do I need a Windows disc? I...don't have one. I think...

For me i think it was saved on a partition in the hard drive (the installation for Windows was) and my laptop is about 4-5 years old so id imagine it would be the same for you.

Exactly? I cant tell you as im not sure. I know that you can access it through the sony vaio recovery during bootup or if you could also install it through recovery discs if you made those when you first bought your laptop. One of the first notifications i got after i turned it on was to make these discs. Sorry im not much help

Microsoft hosted official download mirrors for various Windows 7 editions a while back then, which you can use to install and register with the product key on the bottom of your laptop.
Unfortunately, they have removed all of the links at some point.

I imagine, though, that they'd allow you to download it if you contacted them with the registration key. Or I could try rummaging through my stack of DVDs and find that disc I used for my VirtualBox installation. I don't look forward to uploading it, though.

If your OS is still more or less intact, you can create a system repair disc.

Hmm. Used the System Repair Disc, but the system didn't detect any errors when I had it try to repair Windows.

Looks like it's a hardware issue.

EDIT2: Great. Set it to hibernate, went to grab dinner, come back to find the fucking laptop has shut itself off somehow. Unable to boot it up. Again.
