Server Screw Up Kills MMO
#1
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/vie...-Kills-MMO
Quote:M2 was taken offline at 8PM on the 21st of October due to a "critical issue" one of the game's main servers. Whatever the problem was, it's kind of a moot point now, because the game isn't coming back. Neither current game operators Hangame nor Sankando, the original developer, could restore the game data, and this seems to be another case of developers playing fast and loose when it comes to backups.

M2 had a fairly small user base, but it was heavily based around microtransactions and premium items, so chances are there's more than a few angry players lamenting their lost time and money. Hangame is issuing "conditional" refunds to certain players.

The shutdown brings the whole microtransction model into question. If persistent games can disappear so abruptly, and for such an easily avoidable reason, then all of a sudden those fancy in-game items don't seem like such a solid investment. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some hats to sell.

never played it... but kinda interesting... just think your favourite mmorpg can dissapear by a mistake... is kinda creepy... :f6:

Thats the reality for most MMORPG, they can be taken down at any minute and without any notice and could not ever come back online... Some MMORPG will just die out slowly and thats something no one can do anything about.

Eh, generic MMO was generic.

But anyway, that does suck. In a way, though, I wish this would happen to all versions of MapleStory, just because that would be hilarious as we all need to get away from it.

True, but I'm not sure how likely it is to find another MMO as money-sucking as MapleStory is with its potential system. I could be wrong. I don't really know much about other MMOs.

What is this, Basil?
Regardless, I'd just put all my time into WoW, instead of splitting it between Maple and WoW.

Unfortunately, I would jump to The Old Republic MMO the second Maple Story dies. Why humans have to be addicted to something in life?

It's scary what happened to M2, I guess it's best to stay in the most popular games then.

Aaannd this was the kind of thing I was referring to when I mentioned child terrorists and EMPs in that one announcement thread.

But in all seriousness, the power outage in SoCal not too long ago already proved that NEXON has all their eggs in one basket asides from El Nido.

I almost don't doubt that there's someone out there upset enough to try it.

Either way, something as simple as an external backup shouldn't be too expensive once you reach a certain revenue threshold, so maybe I'm wrong...
