Operating-system specific issues with MapleStory
#1
Okay. I have both Windows 7 and Windows XP on my computer. Both can run MapleStory pretty well, but I get strange and downright annoying problems depending on which OS I play on.

Windows XP:
- If I play too long/are around too many people/in a big boss, etc. I start getting graphics issues and the game eventually crashes. Fighting any major boss other than Papulatus is impossible.
- Entering the Cash Shop often causes my game to crash
- If I play for too long without restarting the client, UI windows (equip, party etc.) start to become invisible

Windows 7:
- I get strange 3-5 second lag spikes about 10 seconds after entering a map that has monsters in it. Larger maps are worse. After the initial spike, I usually don't get any more.

- In non-boss maps with monsters, the client freezes and crashes quite often for absolutely no reason, especially at LHC.

I would be able to bear it by restarting and switching operating systems depending on whether I'm bossing or training or using the Cash shop, etc. but they kind of overlap at LHC with the all the activity going on there.

Does anyone know any fixes for any of this stuff?

Update your graphic driver for XP?

Upgrade your paging size.

Seems like your video card and RAM aren't holding up. If the above two don't work, buy new ones.

For the xp issues, that's just how maple behaves on XP. Even running a good system that can play new 3d games without issue, I still have issues with maple windows going invisible and the game eventually crashing, especially if I boss. I do the same thing and reboot into win7 when I want to boss. If I don't, lots of times i'll have moments where my hair or equips or monsters are flashing in and out. As for the lag spikes in win7, they could indicate you need more ram or that your network isn't up to par. Are you on a wired or wireless connection, and what are the specs for your pc?

I've played on XP for 4 years and I have never had my inventory disappearing. For days on end, too.

It's a common issue whether you in particular face it or not. For me, it only happens when I boss repeatedly. It happened a lot with cake vs pie, I'd be online for 3-4 days doing the event and then it'd start getting clear windows or equips flashing in and out. The same happens within 30 seconds or so of entering Zakum. It also happens after about 6-7 pianus battles. Maple is a messy program, so doing anything intensive on it repeatedly and long term causes a number of issues. They use legacy code and they don't do proper garbage collection. No offense, but I built this computer last year and it's more than likely better than yours, and yet I have the issue, so it's obviously not a direct problem with having a weak video card or lack of ram (neither of which apply to me, so neither of which should be jumped on as the cause of the OP's issue). I almost wonder if there are compatibility issues with certain graphics drivers, because it actually used to work better on my old pc with integrated graphics from circa 2001, at least as far as bossing went. That was also during ver .27 though, so the game was quite a bit different all around. Regardless of my drivers being up to date, my ram being 4 gigs, my video card being more than powerful enough to run it, maple simply doesn't allow me to boss on that system, so i've accepted it.

Edit: it's worth noting, i can boot into windows 7 on the same machine and maple will not exhibit this behavior.

I'm wired and I've got 3 GB of RAM. My video card is an ATI Radeon 4770, which is good enough I think.

I only get the weird lag spikes on Windows 7, never ever ever on XP. They started happening with the Evan patch a long time ago, but they've gotten better since then (I only spike upon map entry instead of every 15 seconds). Also, oddly enough, I do not get any lag spikes at all if there is at least one other player in the map, and when I get these spikes only the map/monsters lag - chat still works completely lag-free.

I updated my video card driver on XP (I'd been neglecting this on XP for some reason) and increased the paging file size, but I have yet to see if that fixes any of the XP problems.

Lastly, Maple uses far more memory on XP than it does on W7. I'm not sure why this is.

Hm, I see a pattern. I've got a Radeon HD 4XXX as well. The card is powerful enough so it's not an issue of the video card itself. Maybe it's a problem specific to the xp driver on this card family. Are you running 800x600, and how does it behave in windowed mode compared to fullscreen?

No, I run in 1024x768. I could never bring myself to do 800x600 now that the former is available. Tongue

Windowed mode behaves exactly the same as fullscreen on XP.
On W7, Windowed mode crashes a bit less than fullscreen does.

I never said anything about your particular system. I disagreed with your claim that Maple works indiscriminately across all XP machines and presented reference. Anecdotal, that may be, but it's still as relevant a case as yours is. I have heard of countless instances where your scenario happens, but I have also had plenty of contacts who never had any noticeable issues.

I used to run Maple on an NVIDIA GS 8400 card if it helps.

Like I said, perhaps it's an issue with that family of cards and the XP drivers for them. I was just saying that jumping to the conclusion he needs more ram or a better video isn't really the best route. Plenty of users with nice systems have the issue we talked about. Apparently it affects other systems too, Vista and windows 7 included. Win7 shows the issue for another user here. Honestly it's more than likely a configuration/driver thing that's going to very from system to system, so there's no good fixing besides keeping your drivers up to date and hoping Nexon works to correct these issues on their end as well.

Since the last patch/maintenance/Hackshield update...

This no longer occurs. I hunted my Peridots, made a UE, killed Pap twice, and then trained a level at LHC without a single client crash.

I still get the odd lag spikes, but only in large maps where I'm the only player present.

I know this thread is kind of old, but I stumbled across it today, so I figured I'd add on.

I have the XP issues as well, pre and post formatting. If it matters, my video card is a Nvida GForce 8800 GT.

I'm hoping to find a way to fix this, cause...yeah, I don't have Windows 7 installed on here =/

Sadly both of us have found it easier to just use windows 7. I tried PVP in xp and dc'ed after about 4 mins. Rebooted into 7 and lasted 3 hours of pvp without restarting maple at all. I'm not sure what these win7 'compatibility fixes' are that Nexon's put in place, but they've worked for me. Guess I'm gonna start using exclusively win7 again. For all my searches and messing with settings I never came up with a fix for xp.

I think I understand how you're trying to explain your issue. I had a similar problem with small spikes from the map/monsters, as well as a slight skill lag during the spike. I did a ping test (Pingtest.net I believe), and found my cable connection had a 3% packet loss, which, seems to me is pretty bad. I called my cable company, they did their thing, and now I experience a lot less lag spikes.

My main computer, a Windows 7 computer, I can pretty much do anything in Maple, but it's definitely getting more sluggish. JQs are harder now than 2 years ago because of little-tiny-barely-noticeable spikes.

My secondary machine, with windows XP is no better. Town lag, Skill lag, Lag when holding a button down, Changing channels takes forever, and most bosses give that horrendous "I'd-Rather-Just-Fake-DCing-right-here-and-say-I-Lagged-Out" Lag. I could probably point a lot of this at my outdated video card in this secondary machine (GeForce 4 series, forgot the exact model), but some things like Town lag are apparent even when I ran XP on my main computer (that now has 7.)

One thing that works for some people is disabling your sound card drivers. Could try that.

Been there, done that.

I tried soloing zak today. Everything went awesome, with no lag, no anything. Then 3rd body hit, and it started flashing. It wasnt like the game was getting choppy, just zakum's body disappearing. I figured I'd kill it, and my Maple crashed RIGHT on death.

It'd be awesome if someone had a solution, cause basically, being on XP, I can't PvP properly, or kill any big bosses either =/
