This is pretty much the question I asked myself when I decided I want to be a mother and eventually pop out babies like nobody's business.
It really is up to the mother, and what she wants for herself, and her children. I want children. I want to be able to work fewer hours and still make enough money that we're not living from paycheck to paycheck. I want to be able to provide my children with a comfortable childhood, make enough money to be able to go on vacations with them, and have the option of sending them to a school that has a smaller student:teacher ratio so I can help ensure my children get a quality education. I will not lie, I am somewhat of a materialistic person (woohoo being a Taurus!) and these things are important to me. I do not want to make a starving artist's salary and have my children starve with me. That is my personal decision, and a major part of the reason I am currently pursuing a career in nursing.
However, I can completely understand someone's decision were they to choose the other route. I think it's also important to teach children that if they want something bad enough, they should work for it, and that life is not all sunshine and rainbows. It is important that children find what
they are passionate about, and being a role model in that respect should encourage children to have similar values.
Either way, I don't think it's really my place to tell this hypothetical mother what she should and should not do, because that is not my decision to make. If the mother can find a way to work the lesser paying job and still make ends meet, then good for her. If the mother chooses to take the higher paying job and suffer for 8 hours a day so her children won't, then good for her too. It's a decision that needs to be made on an individual basis, and I don't think there's really a right or wrong answer.
