What is "good" music?

The internet is known to hate "mainstream, modern" music, including "pomegranate" like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Britney Spears, Rihanna, etc, and Southperry is generally no exception.

Considering we have a clear understanding of what kind of music you all "hate," care to elaborate on what Southperry - and the internet in general - actually likes and would identify as "good" music?

As a side question to that, does Southperry - and again, the internet in general - really hate ALL modern music, or really just modern pop music? For example, I understand hating pop artists listed above and others, but do you also hate the likes of Eminem, Cee Lo Green, etc.?

Hating certain kinds of music is only a fad for younger people. Once you have matured enough, your senses are actually keen enough to make the decisions for yourself. Calling it social pressure would explain it in most cases, but some don't feel any social pressure whatsoever and still dislike certain music. For example, I don't like rap, unless it is comedic in nature (ICP, for example), which most people that actually like rap would say is offensive to the rap genre.

I guess i could have said that happens in good number of cases, there is people who really hates on the genre but not EVERYBODY. The internet is like a giant highschool and being anonymous here doesn't help much either.

What I think of music is just our instinct to like things we are used to. And that thing is our own heartbeat. Something steady, that tends to be constant, yet with armonic changes when your state changes.

That's what I like about music. With a mix of different sounds, it brings a huge variety of emotions.

I would blast this through my ear drums if I somehow could, without getting sued.

And I don't hate artists per se, it's the fandom that goes above and beyond any limit to irritate me that deserves the middle finger. Sure, Aerosmith fans do come to Lady Gaga's videos hurling their electric guitars at anyone within sight and reach, but that's Youtube for you, so we don't count that (as long as Bieber fans going to the comments of my favorite songs and fucking pomegranate up).
It's almost like religion, dare I say. You like it, good (or condolences) for you. Don't like it? Well at least you took the time to try it and gave an honest feedback. Or at least so I hope.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one to do this, but when I was in my earliest years of High School, I could never fit in too well, so I tried listen to other genres to widen my area of interests. Though it never sank in at first, Metal slowly became something that I listened to on a daily basis. Forward time to the present, and I do have quite a library of metal artists/bands, but I very rarely listen to it. Why? Because I grew out of that phase.

Everyone changes their tastes somehow, or progressively like other genres as they grow. I never used to like classical and J-Rock either, they just sorta grew onto me over time. Honestly, I really can't sum up what is good music. But in my personal opinion, if it sounds good to your ears, then it's good music. If your ears are saying "No" to it, it's probably something you're not interested in.

To clarify on this a bit more, I tried my best to listen to K-Pop. Regardless of whether the vocalist(s) are males or females, K-Pop and me don't mix together too well. Yet, I can listen to J-Pop and C-Pop just fine. Eh. Whatever you like = good music, basically.

I really can't sum up what I like nowadays too well, but I've been listening to more Pop (in general).

Opera. Nothing can make me cry like that. Well, that and "My heart will go on" by Celine Dion. Why did I decide to watch Titanic at such a young age?

I completely agree with you about the bolded section. That's also my answer to your final question about Judas. Though I am one who listens to Gaga outside the club, when walking around campus or things like that, I'll say that the one place I'd have to say is my favorite to listen to that song is at the club. It brings me the kind of emotion I want to have while dancing in a dark room with pulsating colored lights and smoke machines. But again, that's just one genre for one locale. If I was sitting inside staring into the rain falling against my window, I'd probably turn on Fragrance of Dark Coffee.

What I love most about music is, again, what you said, but also the vice versa of what you said: the idea that music can both create/inspire/build an emotion in you, and/or an already existent emotion can be underscored by particular music, enhanced and magnified to a degree that allows for more introspective reflection on the emotion itself.

Not really. We're all aware "Friday" is a god awful song, but there are some people who might genuinely like it. It's excusable when they're kids, but if you think "Friday" is a good song as an adult you have bad taste. Little girls love Justin Bieber because he's OMGCUTEEE and SINGS ABOUT LOVEEE. But older or mature people know he's just another music industry puppet and he'll be irrelevant in a few years.

As for Lady Gaga: I just hate her OMGINDIVIDUALITYLOOKATMYOUTFITS and her fan base. Seriously, you're all annoying. Cut it out. She's not the messiah of music.

I grew up in church where all music is the devils music so i never was allowed to be cool. ever.

But now that i'm older and have more freedom I realize its more about the actual content of the song in that aspect.

I don't care about bands, or genre, i just go by what I hear and find myself wanting to listen to through to the end. And over and over. If it makes me wanna do that then its a good song. Though the music itself is of higher priority to me than good lyrics. Its like i'll find myself trying to concentrate on the sound, trying to break down and absorb every part of the song. Then i do it too much and get bored and wait for something else to catch my ear. Is that weird?

Good music is music with a general meaning. I like all kind of music. People dont like rap because they believe its ALL GANGSTER music! As stated before it has different rap genres. kanye west is good too but everyone just go off his incident with taylor swift and says he is crap. You really shouldn't care what the "internet" think. Just listen to the music that suit you and stop trying to understand others. A song could have a good meaning towards it but the person that hate it will find a way to hate it. Example:He is a white rapper so he is crap

Good music is intense and fast paced, with enough changes in speed and depth to make it enjoyable. It should also have melody.

Great examples are Hardstyle and Melodic Death Metal.

I like fast paced music. But I also like slow paced music with smooth transitions. I like simple melodies, but I also like the music that suddenly breaks with the time beat to make things a bit more exciting.

Heck, I just like music. As long as it ain't stupidly boring or something.


What I'm very picky about is the lyrics. I like my lyrics to not be stupidly cheesy or uncreative. Like the straight forward "I love you don't leave me" lyrics of most of the love themed music aired in the radio. I mean, crap, at least use some metaphors or something!

And it's a shame that there are so many nice music tracks out there that are only ruined by an uncreative lyric put on top of it. Wish every band out there would release a clean instrumental version of their tracks first. Midi files from fans are not enough most of the time. =\

Yeah, if I'm listening to songs I can understand, I prefer it if the lyrics weren't absolute garbage. If it's anything international, it doesn't really matter too much as long as the rhythm of the song flows smoothly, and there's great transitions.

I think "good music" is something that has some sort of message other than the cookie-cutter stuff or actually takes some skill to perform.
