Need some advice from the more experienced.

I've never left my country before, so I want to make next year the year. I'm looking to go on an overseas exchange for studying, and I'm trying to budget for my prospective locations. I'm clearly not made of money, but I'm saving hard and I'm quietly confident my grades could pull some scholarship money. I've taken in to consideration flights/travel, housing, food, textbooks, uni supplies, miscellaneous expenses, health insurance, visa/passport documents and recreation. Is there anything else I should think about?

Depending how your house is you may need to count buying supplies like pans, cutlery, plates, etc.
There's also expenses with transport inside the town (bus, metro).

Where are you planning to go?

I'm planning predominantly on the US, but Australia is also a possibility. I am looking to live on campus in their halls, so I won't be required to cook. And I pushed bus etc. in to miscellaneous expenses/recreation as depending on where I am and the situation, they may not arise.

don't get caught off-guard without a rainy day fund... i've forgotten to include emergency funds in a few different cases and it's made things a lot more difficult

With everything you listed Rick, you may want to set aside extra money for all and everything unexpected that could happen.

I've been very prudent with my budgeting, ie. somewhat overstating costs and understating available funds. I should be good for minor emergencies.

as much as i hate credit cards they can sure as hell come in handy overseas when pomegranate decides to happen. might be something to look into, maybe. depends on how you feel about it
