Private Servers - Good or Bad?
#1
Please follow forum rules and please do not say a name or link to a private server.

(This is not only for MapleStory Private Servers)

Well, what do you think? Good? Bad?

Bad. Depends on the purpose of it tho, but in majority, bad.

Neither good nor bad. It's a tool to be utilized.

To me this poll is like saying:

"Torrents. Good or bad?"
"Hacksaws. Good or bad?"
"Guns. Good or bad?"

The question makes no sense. It is only good or bad in the right hands.

The question is extremely vague and kinda goes nowhere, but I'll give a little input anyway. Nexon says they are "bad" and that they "ruin business" for them, but in the long run I highly doubt it really affects them much if at all. The whole appeal behind a private server is boosted exp and drop rates, and being able to test out a class without putting in any of the actual "work", or rather, time. In the end, these private servers don't get very many people to play, can't sustain themselves, and end up failing. Or people just get bored and go back to the official servers anyway because that's where the real deal is; Friends, "competition", boss runs, etc.

Nexon should think of the existance of these private servers as a message towards them that they are doing SOMETHING wrong on their end, otherwise people would have no reason to move to private servers and stay there. Private servers get boring after all of 2 hours anyway.

Others might disagree with me, and there ARE servers out there that can sustain themselves and have many players on them, but in the end, they end up going back to the official servers one way or another anyway.

(Yes, the question is directed towards private servers in general, but I'm referring solely to maplestory, meh.)

Bad. They're servers not being used for the public good.

Bad. The quality is absolutely shytty and it's full of dust. Look at that fat nerd, being too lazy to take care of his electronics.

Bad. They're probably slutty and only cater to the rich and snobby.

There is nothing wrong with private servers.

I imagine they affected Nexon in some way monetarily, otherwise they would've have put the hammer down so quickly and hard. Sure it may not do much in the long run, if anything, but it did something at some point to cause them to have such a reaction. Also, while those are certainly some reasons people play private servers, one of the biggest appeals of them are that they can play with old friends from MapleStory, in the game they met. It's not all about easy leveling, easy getting godly items, and so on. Most private servers fail because they are run by young people who have no idea what they're doing. The dozens that have been run by competent people who know what they're doing and can code (even remotely well) actually last for months. Some have lasted years, and those long lasting ones have the exact same appeals as the official server, without the terribad Nexon running it.

Private servers are also a very good way to test things, that you can't test yourself on the official server.

So that way he can respond with irrelevant things and not get in trouble. He can't make serious threads in the Speakeasy, just can't handle it Smile

My response: Bad. Private servers only destroy the quality of a game. Plus they're boring because the achievements on there are worth nothing in comparison to achievements on the official server.

Only good reason is for testing stuff.
