Student-Teacher Relationships.

There's a personal story behind this, but I don't really want to/have time to go that much into it at the moment.

Do you believe there's a line that shouldn't be crossed when it comes to the high school student-teacher relationship? College?

Examples:

Is it okay for students and teachers to hang out outside of class?

Text each other on a regular basis?

Going to movies?

Basically, can teachers be regarded as "buddies" to students, or should it remain strictly professional?

1. If it's about school work / office hours, sure.
2. If it's about school work / office hours, sure.
3. Probably not.

Try to keep it as professional as possible.

I know when I was in high school we used to joke around and ''hang out'' with teachers pretty often, but then again most of the teachers were relatively young. From what I've seen teachers who are friendlier and ''cooler'' with their students tend to have more respect, and that respect leads to students following orders/instructions more often, having more fun -while- learning more often, etc.[/COLOR]

High school level or College level?
This does matter.

Going along with what Tobias said..... College level, I find nothing wrong with it. High school level....yeahhhh should be kept as professional as possible.

It's cool I feel but social stigma being what it is it wouldn't look good for the teacher. Not too bad but is a catalyst for suspicion.

Depends on the content and context of the texts. Moderately disconcerting.

Going to movies?
This is bad. There is no justification for it, male student to male teacher; female student to female teacher, or any other combination.

Basically, can teachers be regarded as "buddies" to students, or should it remain strictly professional?
They can be buddies, but there's a line, a limit, to just how much is buddy, and how much is bad.

1. I think it's generally fine. A group of friends (all seniors, so 17-18) and I hung out with our psych teacher (mid-twenties) a few times. They were always group events and we still called her Ms. X. She brought her bf once I think.

3. Depends on how many people. I would say no to just a student and teacher.

Obviously dating is a no-no. Friendship is ok, but might be awkward.

I don't get you guys..

In the end.. We're all just people. We all have lives outside our work force. What's so bad about developing a friendship with that?

I've maintained 3 relationships with teachers after I left high school. They were my favorites and I'm pretty sure they liked me too a bunch also. We did things separately, but could relate. I.e. Go to see movies with different people at different times, but see the same movie and talk about it come Monday.

The fact that he's grading you seems to be a problem.

Do you have a relationship with your boss at work? Well we're all just people, I earn my raise one way or another.

I would totally agree with you. Being friends with your teachers should be ok but...

The fact that he's grading you seems to be a problem.

The best thing one can do is have a good professional relationship with them until they're no longer grading you. After that you're pretty much free to do anything. I like to talk and drink coffe/smoke with some of the last semester teachers. I have friends that go out with them to bars and stuff.

Yeah but going to a movie with someone isn't professional. = a problem

The best thing one can do is have a good professional relationship with them until they're no longer grading you. After that you're pretty much free to do anything. I like to talk and drink coffe/smoke with some of the last semester teachers. I have friends that go out with them to bars and stuff.

You're right, we do all have lives outside of the work place. A teacher's, however, should consist of possibly her husband, friends from high school/college, and family. A student's should consist of friends their own age and family.

What info are you looking for?

The problems with scenarios is that they're not general. They're really just scenarios, and outside of the conditions you've imposed on such a system, they don't function as you might imagine. Unless your scenario is the priori behind your question, in which case, you're talking about yourself? lol

In actuality, student-teacher "relationships" (as you call it) happen quite often, especially on the university level. I used to have a teacher in her 60s who was in charge of the yearbook committee. Many people texted her, and she "hung out" with students. She held movie nights and other socializing events for her students. I have never gone, but she made a tight-knit community. Nothing wrong with that.

The availability heuristic doesn't always work. Being professional doesn't dictate being detached.

So would you say age factors in there somehow?

I see nothing wrong with it.

Only teacher I've ever felt like I would be willing to hang out with plays dungeons and dragons during all of his free time though, so that wouldn't work out.
