Two-hand and Defense
#1
So this is my first time ever making a warrior character. He's coming along pretty good but I was curious about something I noticed. I plan on making my Warrior a Fighter that will master sword use and mainly only use Two-handed swords. I keep him pretty powerful and it just seems more fun to me that way, but I also noticed (obviously) that his defense wasn't to great, it's good enough to keep him alive, but still I have to recharge his hp about every 2% I make (I'm not using pots unless in danger). I generally don't like using shields and one-handed swords. I noticed that there is the skill Iron Body, but a lot of people tell me it is worthless, but I need the defense. I was thinking about ignoring Power Strike (except for the one point that is needed to be in it to have Slash Blast) and putting the points into Iron Body for some extra defense, but then again if it really is worthless to have it then I would not do it.

Mainly I'm just asking, Should I use Iron Body for some extra defense? If not can some one tell me why and maybe a suggestion for better defense (besides the obvious "Get better equips.")? Thanks ahead of time.

For Warriors, you don't really need HP Recov points, so if you want, you could still max out SB+PS. Just take the unneeded points away from HP Recovery. =P Also, I highly recommend maxing out Slash Blast + Power Strike, or else you may regret it in the long run.

Well, you don't really have any points to use iron body for.
Improving Max HP>>>No.
Power strike> No.
Slash Blast> No.
I'm pretty sure you'd only have ~13 points for Iron body (not a warrior) since you'd have to put in prerequisites.

You do not generally need the defense. Defense is really minor in gain. On a max iron body, you'd only lose ~20 damage each it, and although it may seem a lot now, it will not in the future when you're taking 1,000s. Heck, even when you reach level 35ish it will not seem like a lot.

lol well I've already mastered all the hp abilities including endure and recovery. So it's more important to have Slash Blast and Power Strike? Well if so it's okay I can Ignore Iron Body, I don't mind too much.

Defense doesn't matter that much, though some can argue with this. In fact, if you're a defense-stats whore, best person to meet would be Ranylyn on the forums, but he's been pretty inactive due to irl-stuff.

IMO, I'd rather have lv 1X Iron Body than to not have it IF I was a Fighter since Fighters don't get Iron Wall like a Spearman.

Also, Lv 1X Iron Body > Lv 1X Hp Recovery IF you're a Fighter/Page.

Wow thanks for the help, When you put it that way it does make sense that it would be a waste. lol I'm just trying my hardest to make sure I don't screw up my first warrior.

Defense and Magic Defense are pretty much the lowest-priority stats in the game; in other words, you never NEED to boost them. At higher levels, the increase is barely noticeable.

In other words, never scroll anything for DEF or MDEF and never put a skill that does nothing but boost DEF (like Iron Body or Magic Armor) at a higher priority than ANYTHING else.

And yes, you have to have PS and SB, unless you're going to be a Spearman (and even then they're almost necessary until you get Spear Crusher to a good level).

And yeah, HP Recovery is crap for a Warrior and shouldn't be maxed (Increase should, though).

Unmaxed PS + SB will come back to haunt you. Don't get Iron Body except with your spare points at the end, after you max Power Strike and Slash Blast.

If you want better defense. Hmm. Well, the problem with most defense solutions is that you sacrifice attack power, which is always the most important in Maple. (Potions are cheap, leveling speed is precious.)
  • You could use tops and bottoms. They have more defense than overalls, and more possible stats, but good luck finding good enough DEX pants with your funding. You need to still keep your DEX low, and a 100%ed level 35 overall is the cheapest equip option there.

  • You could go 1H and use a shield.

  • Most viable option for you: Buy Grilled Cheeses in NLC. They last for 30 minutes and give pretty good DEF. They're cheap, too. They're definitely worth it to reduce your pot usage if you don't mind pressing another key.

  • You could also get Power Guard before Rage. Power Guard is a very good defense skill, and Rage can be made up with Warrior Elixirs. That probably won't save you much money, because Warrior Elixirs are expensive, but it will increase your damage a little, since PG returns damage to the monsters.

  • You could save up money and get your Zhelm at level 50. Zhelms have 150 WDEF and 150 MDEF. Plus, the accuracy Zhelms give will be great for you, so you can add more to STR.

Bottom line is, you'll have to use more potions when you level up more. Sitting to heal HP gets really inefficient after a while. You can reduce your pot usage various other ways, of course. As you level, though, pot costs will become less significant, at least until mid-third job when you start to take on much stronger monsters.

Wow thanks everybody for the quick answers, so basically Iron Body is worthless, but I maxed HP Recovery. Is it bad I did that?

I think you might be lacking points in slash blast/power strike if you maxed HP recovery and endure =O.

Yeah, you have to be missing something somewhere.

You should have done:
5 HP Recovery
10 HP Increase
20 Slash Blast
20 Power Strike (order with Slash Blast doesn't matter much, just max both)
6 points (I think) leftover into whatever

Don't feel bad. On my first warrior, I maxed Endure and have about 9 points on Iron Body, and I can't finish Slash Blast and Power Strike. So that character is now my level 26 mule. =P

well I had this idea that I could make up for it in second job, because I only plan on mastering Sword booster and Sword mastery and ignore the axe abilities so I could use extra points in second job for anything I missed in first job. Would that work?

Yes, you would have 20 points in second job left over (if I calculated correctly), even with maxed final attack.
Never mind I calculated wrong. Thought 40 * 3 equals 140 for some reason. I really need to review my math Tongue.

You shouldn't worry about using hp pots, Warriors will always use a lot (every 5-10 seconds is typical) and that's just how they play.

You get 1 spare point in 2nd job, if you max 20 Mastery, 20 Booster, 30 FA, 30 Powerguard, and 20 Rage.

Honestly if you're missing Powerstrike or Slashblast, you should start over or skill reset. Fighters depend on those attacks until level 120+.

Crap... Well now I'm depressed, I worked really hard on my Warrior. I just got him to level 25. Well I guess I could buy a few of those skill point resets.

Well actually I also heard that "Final Attack" is kind of worth less, if that is true could I just ignore Final Attack and put those points into the missed first Job skill? Or is Final Attack really important also?

I'm pretty sure it's important for fighters and pages, but not for spearman.

-Not a warrior, don't trust me on this.-

I've heard of some warriors having only 10 slash blast/ power strike, though.

Anyways, 25 levels is not that much...unless you used nx cash on him.

You MUST have FA to train efficiently. If you need to take points out of something, make it Booster.

Something to remember is that as a Hero, both PS and SB are obsolete once you have Brandish, and that PS is replaced with Blast as a Paladin. In other words, you could take points from either of those skills and you'd be fine in 4th job, but leveling from 30 to 120 will be absolute hell (especially as a WK since they completely rely on those two skills, unlike Saders who can use Panic and Coma).

The person or people who told you this were probably talking about the archers' Final Attack.

I've never made a warrior, but I think Rage could be replaced with Warrior Elixirs, can't it?

Okay so I could take it out of Booster and I'd be okay with that?
I don't know I guess I could just start over... I mean I didn't use NX for him. Okay so if I do start him over could I get a few tips. So it's Master PS and SB, Master HP Increase. Should I only have HP Recovery at 3 or should I do a bit more and also, do I ignore Endure completely?
Also once again thank you everybody for helping me out with this stuff, I'm a total nub when it comes to warriors.
