New weapon is "game-changer in Afghanistan"
#1
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20101201/sc_...fghanistan

The U.S. has developed a new type of "smart" grenade launcher which can pinpoint exactly where the soldier wants the grenade to go. It measures the air pressure, temperature, etc. and then actually sends it to the shell.

Quote:"You get behind something when someone is shooting at you, and that sort of cover has protected people for thousands of years," Lehner said.

"Now we're taking that away from the enemy forever."

and

Quote:if, for example, an enemy combatant pops up from behind a wall to fire at US troops and then ducks behind it, an XM25 gunner can aim the laser range finder at the top of the wall, then program the shell to detonate one meter beyond it, showering lethal fragmentation where the insurgent is seeking cover.

What do you guys think about this? The army seems to be hyping it a lot, calling it a game-changer and everything.

Yeah, what else is new. We're always great at making new ways of killing each other, yet our medical science to save people is pretty poor. :|

Erm, I thought grenade launchers could already kill people behind cover.

To add more:

We are getting closer to the auto-target feature of many video games. Now you don't have to aim! The gun will aim for you! Eliminate the human element of war, and you will succeed in killing stuff!

Not surprised this would be utilized in the Afghanistan theater of operations (I've been following the development of this weapon for some time). The US Army for some time has been toying with the "25mm Airburst Weapon" concept for the past decade or so.

I would not want the enemy to know about this if it were as great as they claim. They are either trying to rally new support for the war or it does not work that well and want to scare people. :/

The weapon - if captured - will not have too much of an impact if its used against our guys (US Army). The weapon requires specialized ammunition (25mm microchipped grenades), which is very hard to get.

Don't we already have an anti-air weapon that cannot be used against US military stuff?

Alternatively, potatoes may also be used.

False.

FGM-148 Javelin and FIM-92 Stingers are examples. Russian S-300 and S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems count too.

If I didn't answer your question, care to elaborate? Tongue
