Super Mario Galaxy 2
#1
I loved... or am loving, I should say, SMG1. I'm at 82 stars and it's still unique and interesting. So I've been thinking about picking up SMG2 but I want to know more about it before I do. I hear there's 240 stars instead of 120? Does it stay fresh that entire time? Is it just because there's twice as many levels? What else is different from SMG?

Tell me about it.

Also, don't link to the Yahtzee video. Already seen it. Looking for personal posts.

I prefer SMG2 over the first one.

There may be more worlds/levels, but they're a bit shorter in comparison, however a lot more fun. Yoshi was a nice addition to the gameplay, and doesn't hinder the flow. Stages are also more challenging than the first. There is 240 stars, but they're "green" and you can only start collecting them after you get the first 120. After that, green comets hit each world, and you have to hunt for the star. Of course if you're a completionist, you'll grab them anyway. There's a nice bonus after it's all said and done.

Short answer: It improves on SMG1 in every way. If you like the first one, you'll like the 2nd.

I dunno if you've done the Cosmic Clone stars, if they're even available to you yet, but they're a pain in the ass in some levels.
Also you'll love the final world upon getting all the stars.

Cosmic Mario races were replaced with Cosmic Mario purple coins/regular star goals. They also spawn many at once, so yeah he's still a douchebag.

Mark Wrote:Stages are also more challenging than the first.

Rather than more challenging, I think it is more balanced. Many of SMG1's stages were very easy, but there were also a number that were very hard. In SMG2, there's a far greater balance in difficultly throughout the game with only a few annoyingly hard ones while keeping the challenge level adequate.

The 120+ stars are still a great improvement over Luigi mode in the first, but I still expected a little more innovation in the sequel rather than half steps up which is why I don't regard it as high as many others do.

Currently 242/242 for SMG1 and 182/240? for SMG2.

Also: Yoshi Sacrifice Stars.

SMG2 is more like a level expansion pack for SMG1 than anything new. It'll still be fun if you're really into SMG1, but I got bored 1/3 of the way through 1 and 2 wasn't really more innovative in any way. I do agree that everything in 2 is a minor improvement on 1.

If you're wondering why I played 2 after not even playing 1, my brother got Homebrew Channel and both games on my Wii, and played through them.

Sorry, should have put spoilers there. You'll figure it out; not that it really makes a lot of sense anyway.

EDIT: Ah, hell might as well explain it. The extra 1 star is just something from beating the game with 120 already. After you beat the game you can do the whole thing again as Luigi (harder cause of his tendency to slide) for another 121. SMG2 is better in this regard since part way through the game you are given the option to play as Luigi or Mario on the same run-through. At the end, instead of just starting over the stages, there are an identical number of stars that were on each stage hidden throughout the levels, mostly involving hit or miss jumps into the abyss. The added exploration is nice compared to it's predecessor.

As for the levels themselves, as has already been mentioned there are many more stages in SMG2, but most of them only contain 2-3 stars each, including main-line hidden ones. The "world map" is completely different as well. You have a hub somewhat like in SMG1, however it is far smaller and quite frankly boring. From there, there is one central stage selection system akin to a variety of older Mario games: a main path with a few branches here and there always going to the right with a castle to mark the end of each world.

If you aren't bored when you have all 120, it might be worth getting SMG2, however I'd give it some time so that it doesn't seem stale right away after playing the first.

If you liked SMG 1, buy SMG 2. 'nuff said.
It has more variety in its levels, changing through 3D levels like the ones in SMG 1, to 2D ones like New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Also it has Yoshi (though not too much).

We told you it'd be awesome. :3

Definitely get 2 if you love 1. It's more gameplay than story, which is the only disappointing thing about it (I LOVED Galaxy 1's story!) but the levels are amazingly fun. Some are just plain irritating and make me cringe knowing that I need to play through them in order to complete the game but everything else is so worth playing.

The music is amazing too!

To clarify on this, the Cosmic Marios in SMG2 actually mimic your movements and they WILL follow you regardless of what you do.

What I didn't like about the games is that you lose all the lives you wh0re up on in the beginning of the game, so that when you actually need them in the end... well, yeah.

Given the responses in this thread I think I'm going to give it more time. DKCR comes out on Sunday anyway, probably a better investment.

Also fucking HATE the purple coin challenge on Luigi's face on the toy galaxy. WHY IS IT SO HARD

Nothing casual about Donkey Kong, peach. I'm so excited to find some hidden barrels and collect some green bananas. Throw some metal barrels at crocs with pails on their heads. Nothing casual there.

Yes it is. Too much goop / disappearing stuff. I got to 92 coins last night at around 5:00 AM and then had to start work. But before that I'd spent like an hour failing at it. My reflexes are shitty.
