final fantasy: the 4 heroes of light
#1
the first original final fantasy game (not a sequel, port or spin-off) on the ds. it's inspired by final fantasy 1 and with absolutely no influence by tetsuya "zippers and buckles" nomura, which is always a good thing. the art is by the same guy who did ffxii, however the 4 heroes of light is very cartoony, like windwaker. it has random battles and a job system that appears to work somewhat like that of dragon quest ix... except by changing hats. i don't know a lot more about it beyond that. i am however, very excited.

Its a really good game, i like the job system and the upgrading system. I've gotten pretty far in (last fifth of the game) before i got stuck and there was no guide so i gave up. Its worth it.

Fixed for me. It's probably just me, but I've never liked the "Job System" in any FF game after FFIII came out, unless it's FFTA2 lol

excuse me while i lol.

tetsuya nomura is not only talentless in directing, but he's ruined everything he's dipped his greasy little fingers into. ffxii was to be a masterpiece until he drove out matsuno and took his place bringing along dozens of bad designs and turning the hero of the story from basche to vaan. you know why final fantasy tactics is one of the greatest final fantasy games to date? because nomura had nothing to do with it. (another matsuno creation)

square-enix and video gaming as a whole would be better off without nomura's input.

Hey now, I love Final Fantasy Tactics as much as the next person who likes it, but. . . oh who am I kidding. Tetsuya Nomura needs to stick to fashion designing.

However, I do want to say that every game he helps create isn't completely bad. Final Fantasy IV, V and VI were lovely games (Mostly due to being limited in what he did for the game) and Parasite Eve and Brave Fencer Musashi were also nice games.

I've got it on pre-order. Picking it up tomorrow and then giving my thoughts about it.

I don't wanna come off as a fanboy here.

First of all I really liked Nomura's games. FFVII, FFVI, FFVIII, FFIX, Crisis Core, etc, were all lovely games to me, and I really like the atmosphere his games have.

FFXII was nice, but the battle system killed it for me. It was like a prototype of Crisis Core's battle system, with less button mashing.

Tactics was nice, but that doesn't make it the best FF around.

I think FF games were better off without english dub dialogue.

Remembering back to FF12 and FF10, the voice dialogue was just... Disgusting... The english voice dub was worse than:

^^ If it's worse than this, it's gotta be bad.

If Square-enix were smart in the past, they should have contracted the english pro that Valve had before he died a little while ago, their games would be so much better in english.

Robert Culp will be missed... He brought good voice acting to Valve.. =(

Storyline wise FFT is the most complex, in-depth and engaging storyline of the FF's. Of course that kind of thing isn't everyone's cup of tea, some people may find it a convoluted pretentious story that takes itself too seriously. Or completely fall in love with it and have it be in there top 5.

Final Fantasy Tactics is what I think to be part of a trio of games released for the PlayStation that is a big time 'Love It/Hate It/Who Cares About It' type of deal just because of the storyline.

I loved FFT, don't get me wrong, it was one of my first turn based RPGs, along with Shining Force 1 and 2 and War Gods, for the SNES, but the story makes me feel the same as FFT: The War Of The Lions. The story is too complex, and kinda ''pretentious'' lacking a better word.

I never really understood the hate for the modern Final Fantasies.

Surely non of you can mean FF VI got any competition what so ever from the rest of the series? IV and V served their purpose. VII-IX were great in different ways, even masterpieces. Tactics was great also, but did not make it the whole way to the end. X had its moments ( X-2 I shall ignore). The only ones that are somewhat bad would be 12 and 13. 12 with it's catastrophic fail characters and half arsed battle system, and 13 with its linear approach that is somewhat of an abomination and a mockery to any true RPG fan.

More on topic: The DS game looks cute, but I can't say it moves me the way a trailer should when it is a FF game.

I will buy it if only because my DS would be lonely otherwise. I love the job change system (FFV <3).

^---- HAHAHAHA gonna do that once the game comes out.

Also, I hope the chibi quality means higher quality in gameplay and story.

Hmm... just bought it. The graphics leave something a lot to be desired, and the lack of options can be frustrating. For example, you can't change text speed, any sound options, quicksave, or even save on the world map. You can only save when you run into some dude and his pet fox, lucky he hangs out in front of every boss room and in every city. Since I'm only about 3 hours in I don't have much in the way of jobs. I can feel that jobs (once I get more than two) will make the battle system much more interesting, but at the moment it's rather boring. They made some odd choices that I've never seen before as well, such as the inability to target anyone with anything. Instead, some weapon types and magic attack the "front" monsters, while others attack the "back" monsters. Heal spells hit the lowest raw HP target, and Phoenix Downs are presumably used on one of your dead people. Supposedly the White Mage lets you cast your healing spells on everyone in the party, but I don't have it yet.

I'm usually a fan of chibi/cute graphics, but this just isn't doing it for me. I think they were going for a cell-shaded, DS Zelda-esque style, but the environment and battles really look terrible and the character models are only big enough to appreciate when you're putting gear on them in the menu. I know the DS is capable of more than this. They do do some neat things like adding a curvature to the world map as you run around it. Somewhat of a minor gripe, but I also hate the "map." You get it about 2 hours in (if you're slow like me) and it's just totally useless. Everything on it is so small and poorly distinguished that they may as well have drawn it on old cheese.

I think my opinion of the game will have improved by tomorrow, so I'll come back with another mini-review around then.
