Dumb Question about Potential
#1
Just "came back" to Maplestory, so excuse my noobishness.

What exactly determines the amount of lines on an item after you Potential it? The level of the item? Fiel's and Cyanne's guide wasn't exactly clear about it.

Nothing, it's pure random chance.

Ah, okay then.

Though people have speculated that it's a 3:1 ratio of 3 lines vs 2 lines. Take it with a grain of salt and just take from that the observation that you get 2 lines more often than 3 lines.

Would someone mind buying a cheap item (wood shield) and mass-magnifying glass it?

The issue isn't mass-magnifying, it's mass-potentializing.

However, You can take a pile of basic magnifying glasses to the Pig or Mushie mini-dungeons, and collect statistics on the potential stuff that drops there.

My items:

Bow: 3 lines Level 120 (Maker)
Overall: 2 lines Level 120(Maker)
Gloves: 2 lines Level 120 (Maker)
Hat: 2 lines Scar helm
Shoes x2 : 3 lines Level 100, and 120, both made.
Cape: 2 lines PAC
Earrings: 2 lines Red earrings from kents

All of them were adv potential scrolls. 3 of 5 items which were made with maker had 3 lines. The other 2 had 2 lines. My other equips which were under level 100 were all 2 lined.

I think you have more of a chance of getting 3 lines in higher leveled equips.
