If you love something, let it go [...]"
#1
I always wondered about this part of a certain quote..

Quote:"If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it's yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never meant to be."

The part in bold is something I never understood. Of course, if you put it together with the other part, it makes complete sense. However, alone, it always puzzled me. For example, if I truly love my girlfriend, I would surely not let her go, in fact, I'd fight to win her love to show that I did indeed love her.

What are your thoughts, and do you necessarily agree with the bolded part of the quote?

I think it is from a more FORCED marriage situation stand point.
If you release her and she returns then SHE WANTS to be with.
If not she HAD to be with you.Glitter

I find that quote oh so very true. Though it seems to be a quote about love, it can be a quote on life in general. To some extent, I could say its a quote I live by.

As a Christian, I believe that God has a purpose for everything in my life and I'll let him work things out. Sure I can go out and try my hardest, even compromise my conscience to get something I really want, but what's the point? If I had to ruin myself to get something, then it probably wasnt meant to be.

The statement is a paradox, like "those who want to live will lose it and those who give their lives for others will gain it" or "it is those who dont care about the fame who end up being famous in the long run".

Going back to my beliefs, I can do everything I can beyond the boundaries of my conscience to try achieving something and it still might not work yet I can do nothing and still get to the same end point. You could indeed fight and do everything to win her love, but at the same time, the decision lies with her, not you. No matter what you do, she still decides whether or not to love you. You could do everything and the girl still might not love you yet some other guy might not have to do anything and she will love him anyways. In my translation, what you're letting go isnt your love for your girlfriend but rather your girlfriend's right to make a decision whether or not to love you.

The quote should actually be
Quote:If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it's yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never meant to be.
I believe.

This should make more sense.

I kind of think it means you should be willing to let something go if you are holding it back, well at least that how I read it.

so basically, if 2 people love each other, they need to let each other go and wait for them to come back?

this quote fails.

That pomegranate doesn't work if the one you love is hanging off the edge of a cliff.

Mark, if you were hanging off a cliff I'd let you go.

Does this mean I love you or that I want you to leave a small, blood-gulching crater in the ground?

I think it means you love me, you flamer.

I think it basically means that if you're having problems in a marriage, a relationship, or anything really, that you're supposed to let them go instead of trying to hold onto nothing. If things work out and they come back, it's meant to be. If they don't come back, it wasn't.

I actually was forced to do this recently. We came back to each other and are happier than ever. Smile

I agree fully with this statement. I had to let someone go b/c well frankly they weren't worth my time of day & they weren't right for me lol. But I was still vying for their affection, so wouldn't u know they got married later on in their life to someone else Biggrin was pretty funny..

What are your thoughts, and do you necessarily agree with the bolded part of the quote?

Put it this way..:

Imagine your significant other, the love of your life, lying in a hospital bed, sick, with some sort of uncurable disease. Due to their condition, pain meds also don't work as intended, therefore, they're in such a bad pain that they'd much rather die. Would you make them stay at the cost of their suffering just so you'll never loose them or would you kill the life support and grant their wish just so they wouldn't be in pain anymore?

The idea is that if you really love them, you won't stand in the way of what can possibly make them happier than you ever can.

I can honestly say that I've been in this situation as well. Not as the one who has to let go, but the one who wants to be let go. The problem was, after a couple months of constantly fighting at least twice a week, I just wasn't attracted to him anymore. But then, the more he held on, the more miserable I became and eventually, he finally saw that making me stay wouldn't make me love him.

My condolences to the ones who have had to give somebody up to make that person happy. <3

Well, the quote is generally put in a metaphor with a caged bird, so consider that scenario.

Ooh, so many views on the same quote!

To me it always meant "Don't be too clingy of a person you love and control them too much. If they truly love you they'll keep their word."

I agree.

If you're in a fight or something, let them go, if they don't try to win you again, it possibly wasn't meant to be.

QFT! Kind of along the vein of the "man who loses his soul but gains the world" quote. And I wish I was as brave as you to declare my Christianity on such an openly atheist forum such as this.
