Throwing out milk.
#1
So for a while now I've had no regrets throwing out milk that's past the expiry date. Of course, I smell it to see if it might still be fresh. If not, I can pour it down the drain without feeling guilty about it.

My reasoning:
-It's not a waste if no one wants it
- Drinking it just to finish it is just pointless
- I'd rather drink water, which I don't drink enough of anyways
- My weak stomach might even hurt from drinking the milk

Of course, I feel a bit disappointed that I didn't drink enough before, when the milk was still fresh. In fact, I try to drink as much as I can, and whenever I remember to. It's just that once it hits that point where it starts to smell bad, the cons of drinking it just outweigh the pros.

And yet, some people in my family are constantly giving me the guilt trip when I don't want to drink the last 1/6th portion of the milk. I say I'll just throw it away, and they just sigh or something.

Thoughts, Southperry?

I dunno, my family loves milk so we can usually get 2 gallons at the same time and finish them before expiration. There have been times when we didn't use it all up, but we can handle drinking milk a day or two past expiration. After all, if you don't have someone constantly opening the fridge in your house, then the milk can last quite a bit longer than it would normally in a store. Sometimes if we see the milk is container is still pretty full and near expiration, we'd put it in the freezer at a low enough setting that the milk doesn't actually freeze.

You should probably buy less milk at a time, so the question doesn't arise.

I buy about a gallon per week on average. But when I was younger (15-18), I used to drink 2-3 gallons per week when I wanted to lift and grow taller. Milk gets pretty expensive too, if you buy too much and don't find enough time to consume all of it before the expiration date. Normally, I don't waste milk unless it has that spoiled-taste or smell. If it does, down the drain it goes. If not, I'll finish it if I can.

I've thrown out over ~200L of milk in one day once. It's not that big of a deal. Don't worry about it.

From a microbiological standpoint, you're doing the right thing. The reason food and drink have expiration dates is because you're not supposed to consume them after that time. No one should guilt trip you for following safety protocol; however, if you're filling a 12 oz. glass, drinking 10 oz., leaving the other 2 sitting on the table for a couple hours, then throwing out the rest when you realize you forgot about it....that's another story. Just try to not let something like that happen frequently and, if you can't help it, take less and refill as needed.

Haha

Anyway, 2% is for real men. Not too watery, but not too fatty. Just right. I never have problems becuase I just make it into chocolate milk, and even if I don't, it still all vanishes.

My family are huge milk hoards, so we're actually running out of milk faster then we buy it. So we've never actually had that problem.
Then again, I don't drink milk so I wouldn't know so much about short expiration dates. I drink soymilk. Hope you figure out something

Ah yes! My apologies for not addressing all possible stamped dates. In the realm of "Expires On" I was correct, but if anyone is wondering about anything else that could be stamped on a food product, read the article Eos posted.

The only reason why we shouldn't drink it after the expiration date is because of the smell and taste. Using expired milk to make any general dough doesn't change its quality, smell or taste at ALL, and I tend to do that whenever I have bad milk. Expired milk still last 2 days or more if you treat it properly, though, so bad milk is for me milk not good for drinking.

We never really have to pour out milk. I, myself, have no problem drinking half a gallon a day. Then there is my family to factor in. Generally, we go through a little less than a gallon a day since my family doesn't drink as much milk as I do. Even when the milk spoils because someone left it out, my mom just uses it to cook with.

This is exactly me. Chocolate milk goes well with every meal and most snacks <3. I haven't had a gallon of milk go bad on me in a long time, but I threw it out when it happened. If I can't drink it, what good is it?

Lolgallons...

Me and my mum will go through around 8 pints of milk every few days or so. I haven't had milk expire on me in a very long time, back when we used to get 2 pints of milk delivered daily with 4 on Fridays and Saturdays each. We wasted so much milk then, but our milkman decided to just stop delivering to us so we had to go to the shop and buy it.

We also buy the 4% milk or whatever the blue label one is. It tastes better, imo. And we (sometimes) cook using milk so it's better for that.

I used to buy 2L bottles of milk, but I never got through it all before it expired and it just killed me having to throw it out. Now I buy 1L bottles so I don't waste any. Oh, and skim milk is the only milk for me. 99.5% fat free =]

I can't believe how much milk some people go through.

Me... i eat cereal occasionally and use milk in coffee. Occasionally cooking and that's about it. More often than not my half gallon passes expiration before im through with it. (it's close though).

Drinking a straight up glass of milk? I can't remember the last time I did that. I'm not a big straight milk fan.

On an average day I drink about 1 liter milk per day... along with most dutch people... I never have to throw away milk! Tongue

I guess that's one of the the reasons why the dutch are the tallest people in the world (well ok, after the Masai tribe, but that's not a country).

My house goes through at least 2 gallons per 5 days. I drink so much milk that they tell me to drink something else.
