Clean My Room - Need Tips!
#1
How do I clean my room to reduce dust and allergens? I have a shitty vacuum clean and basically no cleaning supplies except cloths and sanitizer wipes. I would like to reduce airborne dust and thoroughly clean the carpet (which locks in alot of dust). I also think I should wash my bed. Can anyone offer some handy tips as to how to thoroughly clean my room? I'll buy the supplies if they are cheap enough since I just want to be able to BREATHE.

There's those machines that sucks up your current air in your room, and releases it out clean. I forgot what those things are called, I have like '2' in my room. I usually spray my room with scented stuff too. Clean your sheets once every month, but if you're like me, once every two.

I usually just vacuum and wipe dust away with a damp cloth. You could try airing your blankets and pillow. Take them outside on a sunny day and beat the crap out of them with a stick, then leave them air in the sun for a few hours.

If you don't have central vac, there are vacuum cleaners with HEPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HEPA) filters or something. Those would help reduce things. Also there are air purifiers that have that kind of filter built in, PLUS it uses electricity and charges the particles in the air passing through it and have a oppositely charged metal plate to attract any other particles left over. Plus the electricity would kill the stuff in the air...

O_O.

You're supposed to clean and change your sheets every two weeks. That's a health issue going that far.

Like said above Goals, try and get an air purifier system if you can, though I'd expect them to run on the more expensive side (I'm thinking of the famous Ionic Pro). Opening a window might help as well, just to get air circulation in the room, but you may need to clean your window/screens before you do that to make sure wind blowing in isn't carrying dust sitting on the surface. For basic surface-level to deep-cleaning, I would start off by seeing if you can't borrow a better vacuum from a neighbor or something. Definitely get in there and vacuum the carpet well. For all other surfaces, use Pledge spray and paper towels to get rid of any dust/other allergens. Again, with the bed, make sure you change your sheets every two weeks. "Washing" a bed is probably an expensive and time-consuming process that requires taking your mattress in to some industrial cleaning place where they can dry-clean/whatnot, so I'd focus on doing what you can at home. Try vacuuming your bed too if you can borrow a "dust-buster" vacuum (one of the little handheld ones), and if you absolutely need to chemically wash it, just Google products and processes you can use.

That should help you immensly, but I still agree with others: if you can, try and get an air purifier system. For someone sensitive to dust and allergens, it's almost a necessity to survive (which sounds like what you're simply trying trying to do DSmile. Convince your parents to get you one if it's that bad, and have the research to help strengthen your case, but I understand that may not work after reading your Angry Zone thread Sad. The best advice, then, is to do what you're doing: ask how you can clean your room and go and do what you can. Best of luck!

Cleaning your room might not be enough. As I said in the other topic, you might need to clean your air ducts (costs 200-300 USD) since air ducts maybe a source of bacterial/fungal contamination (not just dust). The process takes 4 hours where a cleaning team hooks up a large vacuum to your air vents and sucks the bad stuff out.

You all want me to get an air filter - can't afford that. I'll try the other tips, thanks~

That sounds fun. I'll try it soon. Big Grin

I don't change my sheets pretty often, only once a month at least. Not like I piss in my pants or crap on my bed. Don't assume I'm a dirty person though, I just never see the need to do so. Sorry if it shocked you.

There are some cheap air filters you can buy, for like 40-100 dollars
Here is one example
