do you think you could be defined by the music you listen to?
#1
well, your attitude and views i mean.

i know that everyone has a varying taste in music, and someone that likes one song might not like another, even if its the same band. i mean, i was born listening to metallica, even in the womb, but theres plenty of songs of theirs i dont like.
but thats beside the point.

you think that, the music you listen to, can be used to define some aspects to you? i mostly listen to melodic music, stuff that has a good flow and rhythm to it, where the vocals are really clear and can be seen as having meaning. mostly. the instruments blending together, stuff that you can get lost listening to.

No.

I'll explain after I list the genres I do listen to:

-Trance
-Techno
-Heavy Metal
-Hard Rock
-Electronica
-Korean Pop
-Korean Rock
-Japanese Pop
-Japanese Rock

So you might say, oh, well, this particular person probably wears lots of band shirts, and can be pretty destructive because he listens to metal! -buzzer- Eh. Wrong. I have a couple band shirts, and I'm far from destructive (unless I get seriously pissed off). People would never know I listened to Metal unless I told them, because they just don't expect it, period. It's due to my 'ha-ha' and child-like personality, it completely shocks people. But because I'm Asian, they'd expect me to listen to J/K-Pop/Rock.

I feel I'm an even more diverse music enthusiast than Kawasari, considering my tastes lie in, as I like to describe them, "anything that sounds cool/interesting to me."

My point is, if you're a person who listens to only a couple similar genres of music, chances are you are more easily identifiable by these tastes than others considering you're at a higher chance of incorporating more from these styles into your life. For example, my sister LOVES rock, especially classic rock, and because that's essentially the only genre she listens to it's no surprise she has a lot of band shirts, posters, and Rock Band/Guitar Hero games. That's not to say that everyone who exclusively adores one reason of music will embody that genre; Kawasari is a great example. I would go as far as saying his music interests are very similar in the cultural domain they all exist (K-Pop being the most diverse), but as he said, it's not like he fits any stereotypical behavior demonstrated by metal heads. He plays MapleStory after all (jkjk!).

But yeah. tl;dr is that this is one of those questions that's completely individual. I would say a person can be defined by their musical interests when such passions permeate other aspects of their lifestyles, ie. clothing, piercings, etc.

I'll have to agree with the above, because I'll listen to anything and everything, and I can't be everything.

Definitely this.

Easiest way to find out is to see if people can guess what we listen to based on what they know about us through our posting styles. A few people here have a loose idea of what I'm into (Mark and Rick mostly) but yeah, let's see if anyone can guess.

also anyone who dresses based on their musical tastes is fucking retarded.

I'd say no, in my case. I am a super calm person, but I love metal stuff. Screams <3.

I don't' really listen to a music, so I'm afraid I can't be defined.

Actually, I'l give an example. You've all witnessed the games I spazzed about that I enjoyed, or some of the bands I liked. But, due to childlike personality, it doesn't really fit with the music below:

Yet, this is so far, is my favorite Electronica-genre song.

My music definatly defines who I am.
I listen to:
-rap
-acoustical experimental
-techno/dubstep
-rock
-metal
-deathmetal
-acoustical

so you see rap and metal/deathmetal are for when im bmxing, same for techno. The beats flow really well with biking
Acoustical/experimental shows me as slightly hippie/stoner i guess
rock is how i was brought up.

If you knew me irl youd deff understand. It sure as hell defines me.

I dress in a hip-hop/urban style, but I can't stand rap music >_> I also go to church almost everyday of the week. All I listen to is:

-Hard Rock
-Screamo Rock
-Metal
-Heavy Metal
-Death Metal
-Metalcore
-Trash
Etc. just about everything along that line. quite the paradox

Yes, yes it is. Frasier is the greatest thing to have happened to TV since... Cheers.

Nope. My tastes in music are far too wide to provide such a definition (unless the definition itself is vague and meaningless).

Oh god no.
My music is usually dark, loud, and described as "screamining noise" by everyone in my family.

I love this song, rhythme(sp?) wise. To say it describes me would imply I have a negative outlook on life... which is just not true. I rarely look into the words of a song when deciding whether I like it. :/
If it says something clearly that I disagree with, I won't listen to it.
See: Soad - Science, previously linked video, a few others I cant' remember.

My entire family, extended family and family friends think I'm literally insane for listening to this kind of music (I chose these three because they're pretty much 3 different types of music by the same artist):

Then again, I think it's just because they like redneck hick music (country music). Anything outside of that, they think it's the Devil's music.

I don't think my entire personality can come from what music I listen to, but a good portion of it can be. What do you people think? :f6:
