Legalization of Marijuana discussion
#1
What do you think of this topic? Are you for/against/neutral and why?

Something i wrote about the subject earlier:

Quote:What people don't realize about making weed illegal is that it not only creates a demand for it, but it causes a lot of other things. Crime for example. Because weed is illegal, if they catch dealers that's a crime. Same applies for other weed related activities. This of course costs a LOT of money to do compared to just leaving them alone if it was legal (and drug busts happen a lot too). There's also general benefits of making it legal. Economy gets boosted (which you mentioned), and possibly test scores as well. Friend of mine told me about a test where a guy took the SATs sober and then high, and he got a better score when he was high. What the legislators have to do is weigh the pros/cons and costs of it being illegal vs legal and make an educated decision.

I say "for." You know, the only reason why the mass majority does it is because it's illegal and they like the thrill of not getting caught for doing something illegal. If they made it legal, you'd probably have less people caring to do it. Kind of like cigarettes... Sure, tons of people smoke cigarettes, but if it were illegal, you'd probably be seeing MORE people doing it for the thrill of getting away with it.

Let the idiots ruin their lives. It's not going to affect me any.

Hahahahahahaha so ignorant.

THE PROBLEMS WEED CAUSES LIKE SITTING IN YOUR HOUSE AND EATING LOTS. SO. DAMN. AWFUL.

Weed doesn't cause any problems. It's a downer, so you're not likely to go out and cause trouble like someone who's drunk or freak out like someone who's on any other drug. Weed is harmless save for the few people who idioticly choose to drive under the influence and end up hitting someone, but those people probably aren't very good at driving anyway, and just as many accidents happen when people aren't impaired by weed.

There is legitimately no reason to be against weed. If everyone were high the world would be a better place.

edit: haaaaaaaaaahahahha @ shikage's post.

POT IS RUINING MY LIFE. I CAN'T CHANGE THE CHANNEL. TOO HIGH. IT'S ALL OVER.

You say that next time your family gets killed in a car accident with someone who was high. It messes with your brain as much as alcohol does.
People say "oh, let them do X because it does affect me" when it does.

@Sarah:
You haven`t known someone who was affected by someone who was smoking weed. You don`t know.

This is a stupid reason to be anti-weed. People are affected by all sorts of things. Driving while talking on the phone or texting, or just not paying attention. You can't blame only potheads for being bad drivers because someone you know just happened to be hit by one of the idiots. Would you damn cellphones to hell if that's what caused the effect? Would you stop eating if the person had a burger shoved in their face at the time?

The point is, you've got to place blame properly in such an incident. Weed may have been a contributing factor but it wasn't the only one, I assure you. Put responsibility on the idiot who's actions caused whatever happened. If you allow "being high" to be an excuse for them then they get away with doing wrong while everyone else who does the same thing but doesn't hurt anyone else gets a bad reputation.

Lol @ you. As if I can't easily get over someone's death who treats me like pomegranate every day. Every time one of my family members has passed away in the past, I never cry nor feel sorry. Maybe I'm fucked up, I don't know. But I can easily sever bonds with people if I need to. As for me, I could care less if someone gets high and causes an accident. If I'm not there, it doesn't affect me. If I'm there, well... If I die, I die. I can't do anything about it now, can I?

@ the driving thing: Trust me, accidents might even go down. Whenever i'm high i always drive like 5 mph under the speed limit, and i'm so focused on what i'm doing anyway so getting into an accident is really hard.

Right now? No. o.o

I got high with someone last month though and he just ranted about this whole debate. Most of that paragraph came from him, lol.

Can you sever your own body parts and have them regrow into identical clones of yourself like a starfish. There still isn't enough teenage angst in the world to make the world go round.

That would be a great argument if alcohol was illegal.

I'm for its legalization, although I personally wouldn't...smoking stuff = bleh. Cigarettes are worse, it would help the economy, and I don't really see much problem.

What does that have to do with anything?

IN ANY CASE, people driving high is the same as driving drunk. If it happens, it happens. It's not like you can avoid it. DUI is ILLEGAL, yet people do it anyway. SMOKING MARIJUANA is illegal, yet people do it anyway. It's the same concept. If people drive high if smoking pot was legal, it's no different than people driving drunk. The only difference is the amount of idiots on the road. I don't think that'll make much of a difference in accident counts per year.

Yeah. It sounded like someone high wrote it. This one friend of mine took the SATs with a blindfold on and got a perfect score. Really? No. The fact that you're not high and you still decided to post this makes me hesitant to legalize weed under the possibility that it could cause greater circulation of the substance. Society is already way too stupid. The last thing I need is to deal with is stupid people acting retarded.

I'd have to rewatch that thing from the History Channel, but iirc, weed is only illegal now because it was popular amongst black people a hundred years ago, and some racist people pushed to ban it.
It's called weed for a reason: It's a weed. Trying to stop it's growth is damn near impossible.
Alcohol and Cigarettes are far more dangerous than weed: No one has ever died from ODing on Marijuana. Ever. Doing stupid pomegranate under the influence? yea. ODing on crap added to the weed because it's in a black market? Yea. But weed itself has never, ever, killed someone from an over dose. It just can't do it.

If people are going to come in here with addiction arguments: Caffeine is more addicting than weed, and there are no restrictions on caffeine consumption, so what makes a weed 'addiction' so bad?

Whether you care to admit it or not, people will use weed. They have for millennium, and they will continue. A flat out ban on it only creates dangerous black markets.

People like to agrue "well, what if they smoke and drive?!?!?". No one wants a flat out "no law can affect what you do with you weed" law. There'd obviously be restrictions similar to that of alcohol. I'd argue for an age of 15 or so, if any, because every highschool in America has Weed users, so an 18 limit makes no sense, and the BS limit of 21 shouldn't be that high on Alcohol as it is.

...50% of my friends does weed. I know they do. I've seen them done it. I was next TO them when they smoked it. I was literally right there. They got me to inhale a bit too, but it wasn't anything huge. I don't find it as harmful as most people would say. Tried:

-Smoking cigars + cigarettes (stopped at the moment), but if you wanna get specific, I only enjoyed cigars.
-Drinking, and I'm never going to quit. I'll drink less, but not quit.
-Weed

The smell wasn't great, but it's not that bad either. Weed + drunkeness while playing games leads to... interesting results though. It's not that bad. -shrug- I hated it at first, but when I started reading and researching more into it, I realized if it was bad, it should be comparable to that of smoking cigarettes. Which to me, is like an antbite.

I'm for it's legalization, however I think making the argument that 'just because it's illegal it makes more people wanna do it, so why not just legalize it?' is not a good argument at all. You could then say it about every other drug out there and even things such as theft. People steal things because they love the rush of them doing something illegal, so why not legalize stealing?

While I am totally for cannabis, "legalization" is a huge term for this case. You'd be probably better off talking about depenalization. To legalize is to entitle people to legally do something now banned by law. If legalized, pot plants are legalized too, and commerce is as well.

By lifting the ban on personal consuming, regular or occasional consumers are allowed to carry or smoke weed in private places, such as home or whatever. Pot smokers, in this case, are no longer plausible for emprisonment, but called sick people if found with problems.

In my country, as well as in the Netherlands and some other country, marihuana has been depenalized and I cannot say the outcome is bad.

Weed, differently to what most people believe, is not even as bad as alcohol, tobacco or harder drugs. In fact is lighter instead. Most of us know our way around Google, any of you can check this yourselves.

As for Takebacker's first post, you can't measure if "legalizing" or depenalizing pot with one of those examples. Saying some random guy had a better score studying high instead of sober, only reinforces the gap between what people think about pot and its regular consumers and the real effect.
