Things "Wonderking" does right that Maplestory does not.
#1
In the wake of s'hit patches that nexon has pumped out recently (along with nothing interesting to do outside of maple), i sought out to find something to waste my time on. I stumbled upon a new MMO that was released a few weeks ago today called "Wonderking". After about a week of playing (and 2 level 31+ characters later), i'm very impressed. Here's a list of things that Wonderking does well.

1) The cash shop. Yeah, i think wonderkings CS is better than maples. Why? Well, i don't know how many points you get per $1, but just a quick look through it's CS (though it is pretty small, which is to be expected from a game that is a few weeks old) and i saw AP/SP resets that not only reset ALL points you have (instead of just one at a time) but cost a fraction of what Maple AP/SP resets do.

2) Training is way faster. After two days i got a ninja to level 37. When maple was as old as this game is right now, it probably would have taken 2 weeks to 2 and a half weeks or longer to do that. Not only is it fast, it's easy. My leveling places was as followed:

1-16ish questing
16-23ish killing the boss of the beehive
23-28ish purification of the wind temple quests
28-37 killing "Debrak" (the boss of the wind temple)

You might notice that i grinded on a boss to level. This brings me to my next point.

3) Bosses for lower levels, and the same bosses being extremely rewarding to kill. Imagine if king slime gave you 10% per kill, dropped clean golden weapons/armor, was instanced (mini-dungeoned), you could fight him as many times as you wanted, and had no level limitation. That's what killing the boss of the beehive is like. Same thing for debrak. I have heard that the training spot at level 40 is a boss that can ohko ranged classes, but if you kill him a certain way he never attacks you. The boss is apparently awesome to train on till level 60.

4) Questing. There's a quest that gives 1 SP regardless of what class you are, which is something maple should do. Quests in general are great to level off of up to a certain point though.

5) Engaging playstyles. I've only played two classes so far. Gunner (literally just like gunslingers (as far as pros/cons go) except pretty strong in the beginning of the game), and ninja (like sins in NAME ONLY. Their playstyles are literally polar opposites) At level 37 my ninja has 5 skills all with cooldowns ranging from 2 to 5 seconds. If i don't use all of those skills, then i'll be really weak and also be very vulnerable to attack because i'd be standing around a lot. I haven't seen a single main attack skill that doesn't have a cooldown. As you can imagine, this makes for extremely engaging game play.

These are only things i've noticed after a week of playing. Is there more to this game than what i've already seen? Probably!

I can't help but feel like its a copypasta of maple.
-Side-scrolling 2D MMO.
-Sprites.
-Has that "quirkyness" that maple percieved.

But I do agree with you on some points to where it had an "improved" system from maple. Plus its hard to find a good 2D mmo. Question though, is equip modification as intricate as maple's?

Seems interesting.

I am now downloading Wonderking, thanks to your review. Big Grin

EDIT: Okay it's installed and I'm level 7 as I type this. It's actually really fun; probably one of the best MMOs I've played in a while.

I personally think Dragonica blows Wonder King out of the water, but maybe I should try it again sometime...

EDIT: Well Dragonica would if it was just as old as WK. Because it's 6 months old though, it doesn't have much.

Yeah, Dragonica blows maple and wonderking out of the water. Wonderking is ugly as hell, too.

Kinda. There's equips you get that are gold/orange and then you just wear it or scroll it if it's a weapon. Mostly everything relies on stats, so i don't think you can scroll equips with stats. You can probably get stats on equips though.

I forgot to mention that you get a free full 1st job SP reset when you get to 1st job (lv 30). That makes it so most 1st job builds are just whatever the f'uck you want.

Same with Dragonica. In maple's defense, they walk you through the first job now and really only give you skills you'll actually need.

As far as new classes go yeah sure but these are base classes. The adventurers as far as maple goes. Eventually yeah maybe they might make new classes (i think only the 2nd adv is out (80-120) so we still have one more (120-200) anyway), but imagine if they did that for this game. Everyone f'ucks up on their first character. At least this way they're being awesome to their players.

So I decided to try this and I have to say

It's just awful. A lot of it is copied from maple, as expected (including monster cards) but as far as graphics and controls go, it's way, way worse. A few instanced dungeons are nice but there are a million other games that do them better and aren't completely terrible. Wonderking 2 gets 8 thumbs down.

What other platformer MMO has controls as good as Maple's though? I've played a few and nothing can compare. Sure it has its flaws (lol press jump to jump full height every time, even Mario didn't do that - and some of the limitations of Aran's combos are annoying) but most other ones I've tried were terrible. Less smooth, more unreliable, etc.

I like it too. Not super great, but fun sometimes. It's a nice break when I get bored of grinding on maple.

Farrey on Windus, if you wanna add me.

The controls are only bad once you get enough attack skills to exceed the amount of quick slots in one row. Apparently you can't put attack skills on the keyboard like in maple, or take shortcut keys off the keyboard. It is pretty annoying, i have to admit.

Graphics are personal preference. There's a reason i left it out. o.o

Wat @ wonderking 2.

Lol.
No. This going to be like LaTale, fun at first, but then... boring, and ends up like every other game.. horrible grinding, which I hear is worse in wonderking after a point.
