In need of more movie recommendations.
#1
I am coming to all of you again with one simple goal: to find good movies. But this time I have a specific request. I need movies with astronomy in them, I am going to be criticizing the astronomy in the movie instead of the movie itself for an extra credit assignment. I am open to anything.

I am also going to take advantage of this thread and ask for any good mystery movies.

Lets see. First of all, astronomy as in space? Or traveling to the space and whatnot?

Well, I'll freely suggest some and then you tell me.

- Apollo 13
- Armaggedon
- Final Fantasy: The spirit within (this is too vague, though)
- Star Wars series
- Deep Impact (was it called like this in english? It was "Impacto Profundo" in spanish)
- Space Cowboys (again, I don't really know how movies are called in english "Jinetes del espacio" in spanish)

And... Damn, astronomy is a tough one.

Regarding mystery: thrillers, espionage, suspense or what?

Thanks for the recommendations! Deep Impact, Armageddon, Solaris, Space Cowboys, and Octobers Sky all sound great. I recall hearing that the maker of Star Trek used real astronomy in his movies, I might have to watch that again too.

I didn't make myself clear in my post, I will be judging the actual astronomy, meaning it has to take place in a real universe. Preferably the Milky Way since my class is focusing on that area.

Possibly.

I prefer thrillers and suspense.

Okay, I found a mixture between the two things you're looking for but the movie is not that good.

- Death Star ("La estrella de la muerte" in spanish... I'm pretty sure the english name is different. You may want to google that. I know Liam Neeson is one of the actors)

Astronomy:

- Stellar door ("puerta estelar" in spanish)
- The chronicles of Riddick series (also vague)

On to suspense/thrillers:

- The secret window
- Panic room
- Eastern Promises
- The Lake
- Inside man
- Carlito's Way (recommended)
- The Informant
- Deep Red ("rojo profundo" in spanish)
- Proximity
- Sons of the Mafia (sorry if I insist with spanish names but they f'ucking rename movies here "Hijos de la Mafia")
- A Perfect Plan (with Denzel Washington)
- The Bone Collector
- John Q
- Red Dragon (Hannibal series as well)
- Cidade de Deus (Brazilian Movie)

And well, I'll post more in a minute lemme remember a few more.

Hm, how about a caper/heist film? Good enough to loosely fit into suspense.

Try George Roy Hill's 1973 movie The Sting. Check out what I've got to say about it in the thread titled "The Thread all about Good Movies".
