The competitive SSBM discussion thread

Serious sh't. Because I should have made one earlier, bah. So yeah, I saw some clips of the latest tournament, it was really interesting, but I didn't get to finish all of it yet, so I'll do that some time tomorrow.

EDIT: Oh, here's this, just for fun:

That was ridiculous. I laughed and enjoyed his incredible control. Such quick shine+attacks...

Here's the sequel to one of my friend's favorite videos. The first one has better music, but this one has more interesting combos once The Final Countdown starts playing.

God, that guy's Falcon is beast. Fcking christ. Yeah, my friend plays his Falcon the exact same way. Only difference is that my friend shields like a b'tch when he knows when I'm about to Rest or bair... Jesus christ at the double-knees during mid-air, that's beast as sh't. More so was when he used those down B's, first time I've seen someone even spamming it.. like that. Sh't. Lol.

I know, right? These high level players are so fun to watch. Makes me wish I still had people to play against Sad

Eh, up at the colleges over where I live (state is PA), you'll actually find DECENT pros every once in a while. Before I played competitively, I got raped.. completely. I was playing with a couple friends at my local community college in the cafeteria, this one guy saw us playing, and wanted a solo against me. Reason he wanted a solo was because he saw that I was raping everyone else using my Fox (when I played Fox at the time.. lol..), and anyways.. he used Peach. Let's just say.. I didn't even kill him, not once. He 4-stocked me completely.

From that point on, I started asking for advice from my bestfriend, and played other people, eventually, that's how I got better. I don't tech as much as ANY of my friends, christ. They constantly shffl, I can't do that during 99.99% of the battles I'm playing in, since I space so much anyways.. My friend says even without Wave Dashing or doing anything overly advanced, I've managed to beat him just by short-hopping, timing my bairs and using decently timed Rests. So I'll be practicing those a bit more, and hopefully I'll W-dash a lot more in the future with my Jigs. Other than that, I've been playing Falco and Fox for friendlies.

I've seen non-competitives over here too, but if I'm playing against multiple people, I end up playing Fox or Falco. Meh. I play against some people here during the weekends when I go to parties and get pretty hammered.. It's more fun when I'm intoxicated.

What I love about melee is that you can wavedash like crazy to get closer to your opponent. Marth's chain grab to a ledge is just killer when he pulls it off. I'm a Peach player myself but I spam turnip hell more than I actually go in for close combat. If that ever happens, Down A is lovely.

Competitive Peach players fucks me up really bad, no joke. If someone plays Peach, I have to go with Jigglypuff asap. If I stick as Fox or Falco, I'd get raped. My Fox and Falco doesn't really tech as everybody else's, so I'm a lot slower, so I just end up using Jigs to counter Peaches. My friend over here plays Peach too, he's a beast with her. He spams turnips a lot, which gets really.. annoying, because he doesn't do anything competitively advanced, but he knows what he's doing, so once in a blue moon, he'll pull a Smash-turnip on my ass and kill me. <_<

This might seem out of place but I haven't seen a SSBM thread anywhere. How do you guyz get so proz? :[

I just got the game (lol I'm a new Wii user). How long have you been play especially, Kawasari?

P.S. I'm fond of Peach :p she's fun to play.

I guess since i just started brawl+, i should post discussion here.

How am i supposed to incorporate grabs into a rest combo in this game? I don't know how hard it was in melee (apparently it was way easier), or if it's the same way in brawl+ compared to brawl.

Also, how do you (khoi) edge guard with jigglypuff? Sing guard? Edge hogging?

Spend hours and hours perfecting techniques. After you have gained some skills, practice them on your friends. Get more experience and keep improving. (Melee was out when I was in Middle School so there has been quite some time for people to be pro)

In Melee, I am a Roy / Zelda player :3

Yay for low tier chars >:[

I can spend hours, but mastering something like Brawl could take seemingly months. I guess I'll force my friends to come over more often cuz I didn't have advantage of playing Melee. XD

Huh, are you kidding me? Just beat any 1 player mode game. (Classic/Adventure)

Do you mean Brawl, where you need to play hundreds of matches to unlock her? xD If that's the case, the fastest way is to do Special Matches. Activate Stamina and Flower, and set the computer's HP to 1. Just keep "playing" matches till you unlock Jigglypuff.

Fair/Bair is usually the way to go. Dair is meaningless. Nair has no knockback. Uair sends them up so they can recover with DI more easily. Forward B will knock them towards the stage if you use to away from the stage; i.e. Forward B pushes people behind you. Last I recall anyways.
Sing is pretty useless in both versions, I would say. I've seen maybe two Sings in competitive play in person (that wasn't stalling death from falling). They were both just completely random things that caught someone off of a tech.
Edgehogging in Brawl is more difficult but it depends on the character you're defending. Brawl+ doesn't have auto-sweetspot from what I know, so edge-guarding with a Forward Smash would probably be the easiest choice against most people.

I have no idea in Brawl, but if you're playing Jiggles, in Melee, you could Down Throw -> Jump + Rest on a Space Aminal at less than 40%. Otherwise, people usually Down/Forward/Back throw, and then follow up with a SH(FFL) Fair/Bair or two.

I believe it is considerably harder in Brawl because the grab mechanics are very different for a lot of characters compared to what people were used to, as well as what characters have in terms of recovery. A lot of recovery times in Brawl didn't originally allow for attacks to be "Comboed", and Brawl+ helped fix that.
I'll have to find a Wii and pick up a Brawl disc from somewhere to look into this though, specifically for Jiggles too. Never been much of a puff fan, except when I'm playing some scrubs and just WoP them off the edge.

@Goals: First thing I would recommend you do is get a feel for your character's attacks. Understand their reach, speed, and knockback. For example, as I said up above, Jigglypuff's Forward B knocks characters behind her, so you should have a grasp of when to use it now.
A lot of moves can be useful, but a lot can be worthless as well, though some are arguably opinion. Toss up some characters you want to play as and we should be able to give tips.

? One play through of SSE unlocked every single player in the game except toon link for me. Including jiggly.

In brawl i'm pretty sure pound pushes the character upwards, instead of behind you like in melee. Doesn't really change much, though, since what you said is still kinda true.

Jiggly is super fun once you get to picking up aerial attack speed with her. ^-^

Well you could do that, but SSE takes AGES. Plus you gotta finish some event matches too.

If you do the Stamina and Flower thinger, it should take about 3 hours to unlock all the chars and stages.

SSE allows you to unlock almost every character (only three are missable, if I recall correctly), as well as actually getting a feel for some characters, and playing the "story".

By the way, I just realised this is a Melee thread.

That's good, at least somebody enjoyed it. For me it was, "Ugh, let this end already" >:[

I felt Melee's single player was way more enjoyable. Plus, HOME RUN CONTEST <3. Brawl's fails.

But Smash Bros in general is a multiplayer game - that's where all the fun is ;D
