Collection of data on weapon defense
#1
I have spent the past 3 days collecting some data on weapon defense. I leave these data to whoever wishes to use them to attempt to find a coherent formula for how character weapon defense functions.

To those who are curious, yes this data was collected on an alternative server, and no I don't care what you think of that. This thread isn't discussing, condoning, or even about them. I'm merely forestating that in case anyone decided that pointing it out made them some sort of genius. Seriously, grow up. And if you're a mod, I suppose it's up to you to decide whether protecting your site from the "influence" of a thread that got its data from a server but doesn't really discuss them is important enough to warrant deleting data vital to analyzing defensive functions.

For these trials, I used various equips at various levels to test the damage of enemies on a character while bare and with various equip/item/skill setups. I am posting the average of ten hits. For trial #1, nearly all hits were within 15 damage of this figure; for trial #2, they varied by about +/- 50 damage from the average. For instance, in trial #2, the set that averaged 1385 actually saw figures as low as 1322 and as high as 1428. All figures are without Power Guard.

In these trials I also tested the theory that equipment level matching your level would influence the damage you take. That theory is false. I tried it for instance during the level 50 trial with several different setups that added to 169 defense, including some involving diverse overall/top/bottom/shoe levels, and none of those ever returned a different result than the others.

I dedicate this study to the memory of Rose (BrazenBlitz) whose brother has mentioned she died in September 2009.

For trial sets #1 and #2, I carried out trials with the following setups (sometimes with equips scrolled, including between those levels): Rage alone; no equips; no equips with max Iron Body; an overall, warrior helm and shoe; a top & bottom, warrior helm and shoe; a top & bottom, warrior helm, shoe and warrior shield; an overall, Zakum Helm and shoe; a top & bottom, Zakum Helm and shoe; a top & bottom, Zakum Helm, shield and shoe; and the latter setup with Iron Body. For trial set #2, unfortunately I had to deal with the fact that the server auto-maxes Shield Mastery when you advance, meaning that the shield I was using (a Maple Warrior Shield scrolled purely for attack) had its defense bonus doubled.

[header]Trial set #1: vs. Mixed Golem, conducted at level 50[/header]

-10 defense: 600+ damage (+35)
0 defense: 565 damage
40 defense: 520 damage (-45)
130 defense: 357 damage (-208)
169 defense: 328 damage (-237)
220 defense: 277 damage (-288)
245 defense: 242 damage (-323)
296 defense: 200 damage (-365)
335 defense: 177 damage (-388)
375 defense: 147 damage (-418)

I performed a retrial at level 60. No figures changed, but I tried a level 60 set that had dropped, with the optimum-defense setup for 403 defense total. Damage taken averaged 120 (-445).

[header]Trial set #2: vs. Spirit Viking, conducted at level 90[/header]

-10 defense: 1888 damage (+8)
0 defense: 1880 damage
40 defense: 1815 damage (-65)
254 defense: 1550 damage (-330)
298 defense: 1498 damage (-382)
324 defense: 1451 damage (-429)
411 defense: 1385 damage (-495)
437 defense: 1305 damage (-575)
481 defense: 1258 damage (-622)
521 defense: 1211 damage (-669)

I performed a retrial at level 100. No figures showed any significant changes.

For trial #3, I'm afraid I had to deal with a few complications. As a result, you will have to take the following assumed factors into account: maxed Shield Mastery and maxed Achilles. If you wish to find the figures with no Achilles, just divide each number by 0.85 on a calculator (this will also affect the amont of damage removed per defense point if you are working with that). Additionally, because this is a study on defense and not shields themselves, these data do NOT average in the skill Blocking which blocks damage entirely around 15% of the time. Also, I changed around the equipment setups a bit.

[header]Trial set #3: vs. Skelosaur, conducted at level 127[/header]

(Bare) 0 defense: 2430 damage
(+ top and shoe) 166 defense: 2225 damage (-205)
(+ bottom) 275 defense: 2150 damage (-280)
(- bottom, + Zhelm) 351 defense: 2072 damage (-362)
(+ bottom) 460 defense: 2012 damage (-418)
(+ shield) 566 defense: 1845 damage (-585)

(top and shoe with +3 HT pendant) 694 defense: 1712 damage (-718)
(+ bottom) 803 defense: 1605 damage (-825)
(- bottom, + Zhelm) 879 defense: 1485 damage (-945)
(+ bottom) 988 defense: 1335 damage (-1095)
(+ shield) 1094 defense: 1205 damage (-1225)
(+ HT squad victory, a +200 defense usable item) 1294 defense: 1065 damage (-1365)

I conducted retrials for parts of this section at levels 150 and 200. Level 150 showed no statistically significant changes, but level 200 showed the following changes:

0 defense: 2280 damage (-150 from level 127)
566 defense: 1750 damage (-95 from level 127; -530 from bare)
988 defense: 1185 damage (-150 from level 127; -995 from bare)
1094 defense: 960 damage (-245 from level 127; -1320 from bare)

As far as I know this calculator is 100% accurate.

Sheez, all those factors mixed in for a stat that in the end has less impact than it probably should. It's almost as silly as the Mage formula. With all that in place they might as well have just made it a direct "subtract the defense" reduction, seeing as authentic possible figures never seem to go below 0.7 per point or above 2 per point.
