MTS tax - good or bad thing?
#1
First of all, no this isn't a 'let's get it changed back' thread nor a place to complain.

What I want to get at here is whether this change actually benefited nexon or not.
My guess is that total revenue dropped for the mts - a majority of items I see are minimum price, and they aren't going as much as they used to.
However, is this offset by the amount of tax being collected?

I have a couple of questions to pose to everyone to help gather info on this.

For buyers,
How have your buying habits changed since this tax?
Do you tend to buy more expensive items now?
Do you still buy the cheap items you used to (if you did)? Items that can be included are quest items, etc. items and clean equipment.
Overall, how has this change affected you? Include any info not previously asked for that you believe is significant.

For sellers,
How have your selling habits changed since this tax?
Do you still sell the same items? If so, do you still receive the same amount after taxes or has this amount changed (higher or lower)?
Has the speed in which items are being bought changed? ie. Do your items sell out as quickly as they used to?
Overall, how has this change affected you? Include any info not previously asked for that you believe is significant.

Thanks

To start off, I found that the change affected me only moderately, but in a negative way. I always used to dabble in items that cost more than 10-15k and the change between the prices was moderately insignificant. However, I do charge a bit less for my items now (so that they are the same after taxes). As a buyer, I very rarely buy scrolls and quest items via mts nowadays, something I used to often do. I never actually bought clean items via mts before (200 NX was still a lot - 2 mil for a clean item?), but I did buy quest items, for the sake of convenience. I always used to buy crap that I didn't want to look for in mts and they are just too expensive to bother with now, which is my primary concern. Anything less than 6 mil in value isn't worth buying.

I didn't exactly know where to put this, but I felt this was the most appropriate.

My overall sales have dropped to nearly nothing. I used to make a slight income off of smaller scrolls, like 10% scrolls being sold for near 200 NX. Now I can't get a single one sold. This tax has pretty much put my Seruf hunting to rest, since I can barely even make enough funds to afford buying another 2x drop card. I'm also incredibly glad that I made my Silver Mane before the tax, because I gave up hunting after only 200 rexton leathers. I used to grab ects and crap that I needed for quests through MTS, and very rarely bought an equip if I found it to be nicely above average, but that's all gone out the window since the tax changed.

I essentially stopped using the MTS, I've sold a total of 220 NX worth of items since the tax change, and haven't bought anything. Not only is it not worth buying anything worth less than 6mil, it's definitely not worth listing it - you get 85% of the money taxed away. I sold the 220 worth of NX unintentionally (some guy bought 400 Zombie Lupin dolls at 617 per stack, shrug).

This is a big dropoff from before, where I used MTS to make roughly 40-50k NX and spent a lot of it back into the MTS. I have about 15 pages of transactions before the tax change, 2 items since.

I still use it to store crap though. And for convenience, in the future I'll probably have to buy some items in MTS - but I'll be trading NX cards for mesos (oo bad me - oh wait, I cannot buy cash cards here) because it's far more efficient than buying scrap and waiting for it to sell.

Odd how their excuse was 'to stop people using it as storage'.
You'd think they'd raise the price in mesos to store, rather than tax on the items.

I now sell things only above 3k in the MTS, since I used to sell cheap scrolls or ones that I found from bossing. Let me tell you, when 40m for 5k, I'd kill to sell those scrolls again. Equips are only selling when I reduce from the normal price by a good amount too. Otherwise it's there for the week.

I used to buy certain quest items from the MTS too, but that's gone now.

I prefer it, i only ever sold items that went for a large amount of nx before, and now it's the same, but with less taxed, win-win.

I'd say it's a bad thing. They've started to tax us on virtually everything - trades, shops, MTS, right to the mesos we pick up. At the very least, give us something tax-free.

Or introduce an interest-based system instead. Heh. Excellent

Not a fan of the new tax system. I can't sell any scrolls anymore unless it's in a bundle, and the only item I was able to sell successfully was a high ticket item.

It seems Nexon wanted less people selling low ticket items, so who knows, maybe their system for tracking sales was gettign overwhelmed with the constant 221 NX sales.

As I've said many times before, if they really wanted to decrease the use of the system they'd limit the number of items you could sell/have in the unsold list thing in a day/week's time.

Due to the change it's impossible to sell the more worthless scrolls, and even more valuable scrolls have to be sold in a bundle to split the set tax between more items.

Ughh, I hate the new tax system. Barely any of my items sell now. D:

No one benefitted from this. MTS turned from a moderately decent method of selling items into exclusively storage space. I mean, maybe there are more people buying shop permits to sell items that way instead of through the MTS, but even if that's the case it only works for people who could get NX anyway; anyone who wasn't able to get it before can't get it now and thus can't spend it on anything.
I don't really sell things in it any more. I never really bought things through it, but now I can't sell either so it's worthless. The items I was selling before only worked because they were relatively cheap and people were too lazy to collect them on their own - thus I could make NX 200-400 at a time just by selling things I found in the normal course of playing. Of course the new tax rendered all the items I was selling before unsellable, or at the very least not worth the effort anymore (why should I make nexon 500 NX when I only get 110?) so now I'm basically just using the MTS to hold items until it gets overly full. Items that I do give up and list take forever to sell, when they would have sold quickly before.

I'd actually go so far as to say that this change indirectly caused me to play a lot less, to the point where I'm only logging on at patch time to see the new things. Before I could sell items I was finding while Monster Card hunting so hunting for cards was also profitable, but now I can't do that and the cards take so long to find now that I'm only in the upper tabs, so it's hard to be motivated to go hunt Taurospears for 4 or 5 hours with no guarantee that I'll have anything to show for that time. At least before I'd have the NX made from selling the taurospear drops, now I don't even have that.

Well I only sell items worth at least 10k nx now in mts to compensate for the 500 nx starting fee. This means I only sell a few high priced items instead of a bunch of low priced ones. So I guess that does mean there's less traffic going on in the mts. However I don't like the fact you can't give each other small amounts of nx anymore.

Same here

I completely stopped using the MTS... and almost everyone I know did that too... although I'm spamming it full for nice free storage on my 24 mule accounts... Rolleyes

I wonder how bad Nexon cut deeply into their fingers with the MTS tax raise... MTS was one of their most successful NX crunchers since a -LOT- of people used to use it (Remember, basic economics: Mass = Cash, Nexon?), now i guess their sales dropped to like 5~10% of what it used to be... and the tax raise does not cover that loss...

Ah well, Nexon America doesn't understand the success of the whole micro transaction system, they just turned MTS into a macro transaction system...

Nothing new though, Nexon America didn't understand Maplestory's gameplay either and ruined it (NLC mp pots killed the whole 4th job AoE Ultimates, and with it the whole end game content... Leechers who get afk leeched to 120, only to fail and quit at lvl130).

I didn't really expect much better from Nexon America... Buy a great game, retarded & plain dumb management kills it... They're almost a copy of EA Games Rolleyes

Well, that's what I'm trying to figure out.
However, I don't think it's 5-10% of what it used to be and am unsure whether the tax raise covers the loss, because it might. If it didn't, Nexon would change it back - but they're sticking to it for some reason.
A less drastic increase like 100>200, but leaving the % at the same amount would have left about the same amount of sales with higher tax revenue.

No offense against MapleSEA, but I'd like to point out the auctions that AsiaSoft holds for charity. I don't think a tax increase deters people like that. This goes for GMS too, though.

I stopped using the MTS completely except for storage.

I had previously sunk a lot (for me) in the MTS, both in NX to start merchanting and to fund a new character's equips (since I was a poor priest at the time). I still look at my previous pages of transactions and sigh. I miss the old MTS... it was fun to find great deals on scrolled equips, to camp the WG page late at night and make 1-2k NX off some of those 8 attack WGs.

The only time I ever even considered spending anything in the MTS lately, I searched up Gen30 after they made it MTSable. Then I gave up, because I'm not willing to spend that amount out of pocket, and I can't make any NX merchanting anymore.

The new tax was a complete fail. Worst business decision I've seen them make in a while, and this is Nexon we're talking about.

in GMS the tax was originally 110 + 10%. Therefore, the minimum item price was 221. Then they changed it, so that now it's 500 + 7%. Don't know which tax system MSEA has. Nexon's justification is that this makes purchases over 15k have less tax, but let's be honest: the percentage of items being sold for more than 15k in the MTS is probably countable on one hand. In reality it rendered all of the 1-2k transactions completely ineffective, and since that made up a good 90% of all items being sold in the MTS, the system was completely destroyed. It's rather ironic that Nexon, whose whole business model is based on "Microtransactions", made such small transactions in the MTS impossible even when THEY WERE ALREADY MAKING CONSTANT MONEY off it.

If I wanted to buy a shop, which is 1,800 NX, but the only way I had to make money was through the MTS, then that means I'd be selling items which Nexon got a part of the cut on. So, let's say I sold my items like this:

Player's NXNX in taxes paid by buyer
110(+111 tax)
290(+139 tax)
400(+150 tax)
250(+135 tax)
350(+145 tax)
500(+160 tax)
1800 NX (total)(+840 tax)

The player then turns around and spends that 1800 they made in the CS on the shop. That means that, in effect, Nexon just sold the 1,800 NX shop for 2,640 NX. That's the beauty of the MTS for Nexon, it actually increases their sales. However with the increased tax, you can't make sales like that. Because now, that first item that would sell at 221, isn't going to be worth 617 NX, which is the new minimum. Now instead of being able to get that shop permit by selling low cost items in the MTS, making nexon an extra 84 cents, our poor example player isn't going to be able to get it at all, which means Nexon doesn't get anything. It's plain t see that Nexon shot themselves in the foot with this tax increase. I mean hell, even if we assume the player buys 10k NX with his real money to get the shop permit because he "needs" it, Nexon still lost out on the bonus 840 they'd have made if he made his purchases with NX made through the MTS.

You might say "but hey, now the player had to spend 10$ to get his shop permit!" But here's the thing - ALL NX that enters the MTS comes through someone buying a 10k or 25k card. That means that ALL of it was taxed as well. For 10k NX to enter the MTS, the person who purchased it with cash has to spend 11,110 NX. If anything, Nexon should be *encouraging* people to go through the MTS, because it increases the profit they make on everything. Clearly they're too blind to realize this, though, so they'll do everything in their power to make the MTS worthless short of removing it in a short-sighted fit of greed.

I have never really sold many things below 2k nx, most of the stuff I sell is either around 3k or 40k+, but I do buy things below 2k nx. Gets kind of annoying not being able to buy things worth under 617nx anymore.
