Fellow SP DnD nerds, perform a Nature check on these bees for me
#1
*This is 3.5 by the way.

My DM last session was being a plantain by having my druid not gain any information on a Nature check of 21 on these bee monsters, and I don't have either monster manual. It must either be a Monster Manual or Monster Manual II monster because my DM only has core related material. He won't even tell me after battle, because I won't call them "Cees", or cat-bees. Sorry, but "Cees" isn't funny. "Bees" shall always be a classic. Rule of Funny trumps creative names. Heck, I was constantly screaming throughout the battle that I'm covered in bees and screaming about "BEEEEEEEEES!".

Here's what I know:
-They are the size of cats, so they are tiny.
-Their AC is around 17-18 thanks to their size.
-They don't have venom. Instead, they blasted me and the party with some fecking energy blast or something from 10-20 feet in the air. There was no AC check nor saves. We simply took damage. I believe it must be a 1d6 because I had 9 of these bees blast me for 32 damage, but this would have been 41 damage if not for Prayer.
-Their average HP is 17. My DM said so.
-Some meleed the party, but did not poison any of us so it wasn't meleeing with it's stinger. It's claws/arms maybe?

This already rules out Giant Bees in the SRD site because it only has an AC of 14, and no poison. I can't find any other bee type monster in the SRD. Giant Wasps are obviously not it.

Must be MMII, because I don't recognize such a monster anywhere in MM.

That actually helps a lot. I got MMII downloaded, so it's half the work needed in order to find the monster.

TO MONSTER MANUAL II!

It's possible that the monster you're looking for is an augmented template-type monster. A lich is an applicable template monster for any spellcaster of at least lvl 11 or some variant of that difficulty.

Whoa whoa whoa. My party is only level 8, I'd be damned to be facing a lich. Although interestingly we ARE going to fight a vampire soon, most likely the big bad evil villianess for this mission we're on. My only possible IWIN counters to fighting the vampire is waving around my wooden holy symbol, summon Charlie the Unicorn, or get creative enough and drown it with water. Now That's going to be a pain.

If the bees are indeed given a template type, I can't even begin to imagine what type of template lets bees blast out energy like megaman. Goggleemoticon

lvl 8 eh? A lich would make to be a tough encounter for sure, but I don't think it's entirely out of your league. At any rate, a lich was just an example of a monster template. There are a LOT more milder templates such as water, shadow, axiomatic, etc.

What I can't get my head around is that 1d6 auto-hit no save attack. There's almost nothing in the whole game that could do that (no chance to avoid whatsoever) in the battlefield. You sure your DM isn't just rolling for you behind your backs?

Also, when bees hit you with their stinger, it says in the MM that they die afterwards. It could be that the bees simply chose not to attack with their stingers. This isn't entirely true in reality, but w/e. But simply put, you need more description, and you can't be denied seeing a stick sticking out of da butt unless you were blind the whole fight.

Maybe I can get one of the other players to ask him. Again, I am only guessing on the damage dice. He didn't even roll any dice for the damage, so I was only guessing based on the damage done per bee.

Bump because I have found out what the flipping heck the bees were. I was wrong about their dice damage. Turned out it was a d4 (Must have missed a few wasps) for their unavoidable, and no wonder it was unavoiable. It's a fecking MAGIC MISSILE attack! Pew pew!

I actually talked to my DM, and he told me that they were Phase Wasps. Here's the entry from the Monster Manual II for anyone curious:

YES THEY ARE BLASTING ENERGY FROM THEIR ASS AND THEY ARE 18 INCHES LONG, AS BIG AS A CAT! Eek

PHASE WASP
Tiny Magical Beast
Hit Dice: 2d10 (11 hp)
Initiative: +4
Speed: 10 ft., fly 60 ft. (perfect)
AC: 17 (+2 size, +4 Dex, +1 natural), touch 16, flat-footed 13
Attacks: Sting +0 melee
Damage: Sting 1d4–4
Face/Reach: 2 1/2 ft. by 2 1/2 ft./0 ft.
Special Attacks: Magic missile
Special Qualities: Darkvision 60 ft., low-light vision, see
invisibility
Saves: Fort +3, Ref +7,Will +2
Abilities: Str 3, Dex 19, Con 10, Int 2,Wis 15, Cha 6
Skills: Listen +6, Spot +6,Wilderness Lore +3
Feats: Alertness
Climate/Terrain: Any temperate or warm land
Organization: Swarm (5–20)
Challenge Rating: 2
Treasure: None
Alignment: Always neutral
Advancement: 3–4 HD (Tiny); 5–6 HD (Small)

Phase wasps are 18-inch-long insects that can see and attack invisible and ethereal creatures (in the latter case, without crossing the planar boundary). They rarely attack creatures three or more size categories larger than themselves unless provoked. Like ordinary wasps, these creatures live in large colonies. Each colony builds a nest about 10 feet in diameter out of “paper” that its members have made from chewed-up wood or paper and their own saliva. Because such a nest requires a tremendous amount of paper, many wizards and libraries offer bounties for the destruction of nearby phase wasp nests.

Though they do not speak, phase wasps utilize an elaborate signaling system to communicate within their hives. Their “signal language” seems to be based on a system of subtle smells, body postures, and flight patterns.

COMBAT
Normally, phase wasps attack only to defend themselves or their nests. They converge on intruders in swarms, fire their magic missiles, and then swoop in to sting until they can use their missiles again.

Magic Missile (Sp): A phase wasp can produce an effect
that functions like a magic missile spell (caster level 3rd).
Once it has used this ability, it must wait 1d4 rounds before
it can do so again.
Mutherfugger! It's 2d4+2 damage per wasp!

See Invisibility (Sp): A phase wasp produces an effect like
that of a see invisibility spell (caster level 3rd), except that is
always active.

Now imagine facing 13 of these mofos at once (that's up to 26 pew pews in one round), with about a total of 16 of them killed throughout the course of battle. Talk about making a CR 2 creature pose a threat to a level 8 party. Redface

Turns out their melee attack was their stinger, but since it's a 1d4-4, it does a pathetic 1 damage a sting. Excellent
