Hiya! Call me Nethial. I'm the guy who's been toying around a bit on Dungeon Fighter Online, and I thought I'd take a peek at the other games that Nexon offered.
MapleStory caught my interest, but I'm perplexed on what the game is like.
That being said, I know next to nothing about it, even after having browsed these forums and read almost every single post.
So... um, first thing's first. I'd like to know exactly how long this game's been in service (from what I understand after reading, it's been a pretty long while).
One thing that I don't think I've decided on yet, is which class to be first. I know it's taboo to make a "Which class should I be?" thread without posting preferences, so I'll do that.
In DFO, I'm a Blademaster, which utilizes speed and high combos over raw, brute strength (if any of you play DFO, you'll know what I mean). I'm someone who would like to keep an enemy on its toes, constantly dancing from place to place while avoiding any major hits from an enemy. In my book, Speed > Power.
Okay, next thing I want to address: Someone (I won't say who, because I'm not going to offend that person) told me that this site was based on posting facts and overall deciphering of the game's mechanisms. Does this mean that you guys don't typically welcome newbies, or do you guys have trust issues? What's the deal here?
I've only played one MMO prior to this, and that was WoW. I didn't like the whole "mindless army of raiding drones" deal, so I left. Now, I'm not going to bash this game if I find the majority of the community is similar, but at least tell me there's some decent people in this game, unlike the many idiots in WoW. I don't care if it's just one group I'm associated with, I just wanna know that I have a place to call home and not be judged on whether or not I've hit the level cap by said group.
Which brings me to my next concern: Server choice. I'd prefer a server that isn't too crowded, but has friendly enough people to merit being on. Any suggestions?
Finally, why does the head admin of Southperry.net have such an interest in Chinchillas? I'm just curious, that's all.
Alright, I'm going to close my questions and concerns for now. If there's any more concerns I have, I'll be sure to post them here (that is, if you guys don't mind me doing so).
Later guys!

This thought should be welcome, although

It's basically like Mario, 2D gameplay. Probably you can have a better understanding of the gameplay by browsing MapleCinema.
Additionally (sadly), Maple is an RPG with a plot that's worth knowing about, even though more than 99.9% of the players don't. Refer to [thread=215]this thread[/thread] if you have a thing for this game's RPG aspect.

Perhaps a Thief -> Assassin -> Hermit -> Night Lord branch, or
Pirate -> Gunslinger -> Outlaw -> Corsair.
They have good mobility and offensive speed.

We don't really shun newbie questions, as a matter of fact, I believe most of the regulars here and more than inclined to answering any question posted with adequate and reliable information.
The bolded part is true about Sp.bet's main feature, we like science and facts, not something like [thread=18917]this[/thread]. It's always better to know for sure what you're talking about, instead of giving vague and/or misinformed responses.

I haven't played WoW but I heard it's worse here. My friend quitted this game once for Wow, but he came back in a week because "WoW sucked".

This is hard to answer, I can give you a few heads-up, not recommendation. Steer clear of Scania, for a start.

That will help you in choosing your server.
Personally, I'd love for you to start in Ghettocan, just know that some of the people there are weird, myself included.
Maplestory is also a lot about who you know and how much you know. You can't screw up any point placements most of the time, as it costs a few dollars to fix, so you usually need to know what you are going to get first. Also, many times, if you choose the wrong skill, training becomes tougher. The game itself is 2d, so dodging things usually isn't an option, but the closest you can get to the dodging back and forth, Thieves have the most avoid and also get speed skills, as well as attack from a distance. Unfortunately, they are slightly overpowered, so their equips cost a LOT.
Hopefully you shall enjoy your time in our humble 2d world, as well as our wonderful forum.
As for Fiel's Chinchilla obsession...

Welcome.
Honestly, I would have to say that you are better off playing DFO. MapleStory is not a bad game per say, it just has a fu[SIZE="2"]c[/SIZE]kton of mindless grinding. But if you insist, a Brawler sounds like the class for you. For sever selection, the more you go right on the server selection list the newer it is. I would recommend Bellocan or Khaini.

This is mostly true - Yellonde is too empty, whereas Demethos is too inflated. I'd recommend Khaini as well - looks like a lot of Southperri©ans are there.

this.
i honestly have not played DFO yet, and am leery about trying it out due to it being a game made by nexon, but just hearing and reading about it gives me the sense that, comparing the two, DFO would be more enjoyable than MS.

well, MS isnt hard to figure out once you delve into it, but if you do, bring a life vest and a lifesaver ring. you will thank me.

gMS, the global/N.American server has been up... upwards of 4 years, with the korean one upwards of 6. so yeah, its gotten its foot into the door.

id recommend either going thief (known as rogue in the game) -> bandit -> chief bandit -> shadower (theyre a not-so-popular class, and can oft times be insulted for being weak, when theyre very far from it.); warrior -> fighter -> crusader -> hero, in that their key moves in 4th job involve multiple hits, and in 3rd job you attack monsters to charge up for one of two powerful finishers, and with proper scrolling can be made very fast in mobility; and either of the pirate chain of jobs, with brawler being my preferred recomendation.

SP is a very sociable site, so whomever told you that must have first gone to the funhouse forum and got trolled hard... but yeah, the people here are very welcoming and helpful with answering questions. the saying IS after all "There are no stupid questions."
and as for the mindless drone thing? Welcome to MapleStory. thats just about 86% of what MS is, albeit in the form of grinding or PQing, which is a nice break from grinding, tends to fall into that pattern if repeated too frequently. most of the community is... well, honestly, its a 'take it as you take it' basis IMO, because theres always bound to be ass hats out there to ruin the game, as well as others whore generally nice people, to the betraying backstabbers. but the whole elitist thing regarding levels? that exists to an extent. there are guilds in most all servers that will only accept recruits if theyre xx+ level-wise, unless you KNOW the people therein. doesnt hold true at all for all guilds, but most, and this is key, most everything in the game that has significance requires you to either be at xxx level or have connections with people that are xxx level.
you Wrote:Which brings me to my next concern: Server choice. I'd prefer a server that isn't too crowded, but has friendly enough people to merit being on. Any suggestions?
i myself play in both bellocan and windia, but instead of trying to say "go here, its better than here," or w/e, ill instead say avoid scania (which i refer to jokingly as scamia, funny typo turned witty statement =/).

Hi, welcome to Southperry, the land of chinchillas, pineapples, and...and...whatever.
Maplestory has been in service for almost 5 years. In North America, at least. It is Nexon America's (or Wizet's) first game here.
For your class...click the url in my signatuer .
Stay clear of the Funhouse. You'll need an immunity to the troll virus there or you'll...become a troll. Or die, like Harrisonized.

Thanks for your heartfelt advice. I will take all of it to heart when I finally make my character.
From the advice I've been given, it seems like either a Bandit or a Brawler suits me more. Also, from what I've read, I'm going to steer clear of Assassin, because it seems like that's a major pocketsink, even more worse so than Bandit seems to be (unless of course, I get outside help from someone, but I'm not counting on it).
Brawler seems like the kind of melee fighter that gets down and dirty with his fists, so that's also a viable option.
I do have one small concern though: From what I've read, Bandits use two types of weapons: Daggers that rely on Strength, and Daggers that rely on Luck.
What are each of the stat types, and what do they affect? You guys have a knack for deciphering the game mechanics, you can tell me. Oh, and feel free to throw a bunch of math at me, it'll help in the long run.
Continuing on with my above concern, I'd like to know something: If I decide to become a Bandit, which Dagger type would favor a fresh, out-of-the-ground newbie like me?
Alright, I think I've said enough for now.
I guess after all is said and done, I'm going to choose Bellocan as my starting server. I'm probably going to take forever to come up with a name, so bear with me.
