You need the upgrades in order to get far. The highest level cannon (tank) gives you 40k feet without gun shots or obstacles. The gun can give you up to 4k feet by itself, the rocket gives a huge boost of at least 15k.

Using them together, with good timing, can net even more from them.

Not much more, it's best to save the gun until you are really slowing down. Use the rocket when you at your highest point cus it raises you up considerably.
