Item Guard Expiration Glitch
#1
I have recently become the unintentional victim of a serious glitch. Unfortunately, without prior awareness at the time that this item will expire, I purchased Alcolix's Dragon Carabella thinking that it is simply an easy and cheap deal. The following is a screenshot of this problematic item:

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/4273/maple0007o.jpg

After discovering this is glitch, I panicked, as I had just purchased a large sum NX in order to supplement my in-game mesos in order to buy what seemed to be this godly sword being sold for a cheap price. I felt slighted by this underhanded deal, but I felt that I couldn’t blame anyone before discovering the facts.

I first found information regarding this issue on the Sleepywood forums about someone who has experienced a similar situation around one month ago. Harrisonized was the first person ever to encounter this problem, as when he requested of Nexon to unlock his Black Oriental Fury Coat, he became the victim of this unfortunate glitch.

Harrisonized had locked his item with a 30-day item guard, but after a request to Nexon asking for his item guard be removed, his item became glitched in the same fashion my sword is glitched, that is: it became an expiring one. He promptly submitted a ticket regarding the problem, only to be replied by GM Daliah, who apparently experienced denial and claimed that this item is merely a visual glitch and that it will not expire.

According to Harrisonized however, this item will indeed expire, as there is one restriction placed on the item that wasn’t previously there. Normal items can be traded within the Maple Trading System (MTS); however, he was unable to put his Black Oriental Fury Coat into the MTS. Because of this, he inferred that the item was sure to expire.

Despite the fact that Harrisonized had submitted another ticket explaining his reasoning behind why he believed his item is not experiencing a mere visual glitch, both GM Daliah and GM Cheezpuff continued to believe that the item is a visual glitch. I must add that this is a very irresponsible move for Nexon employees, who should have at least investigated the item itself before arriving at such an assumption.

Indeed, Harrisonized’s item expired exactly when it was fated to, on August 15th, 2009 at 20:49. Nexon did nothing, despite the fact that the overall felt like a ticking time bomb to Harrisonized and caused him much stress during the time before it expired. After sending in another ticket when the overall expired, Harrisonized was forced to wait a full 8 days before GM Cheezpuff, saying essentially that he is unable to offer a full compensation, despite the cruel irony that a cash shop item that Harrisonized bought that is designed to keep his item safe ended up destroying his precious overall.

He was given 6600 Maple Points and a clean overall as compensation, which is nowhere near the projected price of his overall at the time. His compensation plan was essentially loose change thrown at a store-owner who had filed for bankruptcy, which is almost the equivalent of nothing. I find it extremely insulting that Nexon would consider ruining this man’s dignity. Furthermore, I found in this following topic that Harrisonized was even unable to use his Maple Points, leading him to further distress:

http://forum.nexon.net/MapleStory/fo...d/3315123.aspx

Another point I must make while discussing about the incident surrounding Harrisonized is that as soon as he discovered that his item is indeed expiring, he requested Nexon cancel ALL item-unlock requests to prevent further incidences from occurring. Nexon ignored this forewarning.

This leads me to the origin of my glitched sword. In addition to the incident surrounding Harrisonized, I also discovered this following thread on the Nexon forums:

http://forum.nexon.net/MapleStory/fo...d/3188108.aspx

Upon hearing about the incident surrounding Harrisonized, Alcolix immediately tickets Nexon requesting his item-unlock request be canceled. Unfortunately, he receives an extremely unprofessional reply from GM Daliah asking for re-confirmation. I must add here that Nexon should have immediately processed the request. As one forumer noted, it’s as though Nexon prefers to wait for a patient to die before confirming that the patient is truly experiencing a cardiac arrest and not just experiencing minor chest pain. This is another example of Nexon’s irresponsibility.

Instead of canceling Alcolix’s item-unlock request, GM Daliah takes no action and thus causes Alcolix’s items to become glitched after the server check. This is how my sword came to be. Five items that Alcolix estimates to hold the combined value of $5,000 USD were broken in this manner, and my sword was one of them.

Despite Alcolix’s report of the glitch, the Nexon employees refused to even acknowledge the error. Alcolix could sue Nexon for the distress that it caused him if he wished to. I could not believe my eyes when I saw that Nexon dared ignore a problem of this magnitude.

After reading about this incident, I inquired Alcolix about the situation and he explained to me that he had submitted multiple tickets, all in which he felt ignored. Nexon always replied saying that the issue is under investigation, despite the fact that people have already discovered the mechanism that underlies the item guards and proposed a simple fix. Here, I will briefly list the several interesting phenomena that occur with expiring items, as noted by other people.

The first of these phenomena is that expiring items can be retained in data after the expiration date in three ways. One way is to store the item on a spare character and never log into that character after the expiration date. Another way is store the item in the storage system and never bring it back out. The last way is to set up a shop and never close the shop after the expiration date. However, in all three methods, the moment the item is taken out of its “refrigerator”, it will instantly vanish.

The second of these phenomena is that expiring items can not be placed in the MTS, despite the fact that they are still tradable in game.

The third of these phenomena is that when an expiring item is placed in a window typed user-interface, the expiration date vanishes temporarily until it leaves that interface. An example is when my sword is placed in the Legendary Spirit, the expiration date does not show up while it is in the Legendary Spirit. For this reason, I thought that perhaps using Vicious’ Hammer would allow the item to become permanent once again. Unfortunately, I was wrong and I ended up wasting 4500 NX.

The fourth and last of these phenomena is that expiring items, despite not having a lock, are sometimes glitched to have a message saying “[The Item]’s seal has expired.” For example, when my Dragon Carabella does expire, should Nexon choose to ignore this issue completely, could possibly include the line, “Dragon Carabella’s seal has expired”, even though it no longer has this item lock on it, since Nexon manually removed it.

It is because of this fourth phenomenon that Nexon’s customers have figured out the exact mechanism by which an item lock works. What these customers have figured out is that an item lock and an item’s expiration date both use the same attribute on the item in the data. When an item lock is used, it turns the item from a permanent item into an expiring item. Then the lock binds on the item and protects it from disappearing on the moment the item is set to expire. In other words, if the lock is on the item, it disappears FOR the item and makes returns it back into its normal state. However, because Nexon removed these locks manually, the items no longer have that lock to protect it from disappearing. Therefore, on the set date, the items definitely do expire.

One simple solution that Nexon’s customers have found is that by manually relocking these items, Nexon can essentially change the item back to normal. It would be as though nothing even happened; the item would be relocked onto the character and the lock would expire on the same day, just as it was before this entire incident. On the exact moment the item expires, the item will become a normal, permanent item without an item lock, since the lock that is placed back on will protect the item from disappearing.

It appalls me to see that Nexon uses its customer base as guinea pigs, instead of providing Tespia as it has promised to in this letter:

http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?...mp;pageIndex=1

It appalls me even more that in addition to using its player base as a test media, Nexon continues to so ignore this situation in spite of the fact that it has an easy solution that Alcolix felt forced to sell off his items in order to at least make back only minimal compensation. Players should not be forced through this type of stress. It’s as though Alcolix is the Great Gatsby, and Nexon is just an entity that smashes things up, retreats into its wealth, and lets other people clean up the mess that it caused.

I feel pity for everyone who has ever purchased his items, as it would seem from various sources that all he now owns none of his items, that he somehow managed to sell all of his items. This means that these problematic items are circulating around the Free Market, like hot potatoes, ready to destroy the wealth of all the people who own one ore more of these items last.

I feel pity for ejoooo, who bought this 11 Weapon Attack Pink Adventurer Cape from Alcolix, as shown in this following screenshot

http://i36.tinypic.com/k2fznq.jpg

I feel pity for PokeTheFace and for whoever bought these 21 attack Stormcaster Gloves from Alcolix, as shown in this following screenshot:

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8346/maple0007ks.jpg

I feel pity for KalecLostsol for buying Alcolix’s shield, as I am now in the same predicament she is in, as shown in this following thread on the Nexon Forums:

http://forum.nexon.net/MapleStory/fo...d/3280160.aspx

Though I do not have a documented evidence of this occurrence, I do know from the accounts of several merchants and friends of Alcolix that he has already sold his 7 attack Facestompers. I feel pity for the person who bought them.

I feel pity for Harrisonized, who has been wronged by Nexon, even though he has remained moral in the fact that he did not sell off his items and instead kept the loss Nexon incurred to himself.

Finally, I reserve the most pity for Alcolix. I am positive that Alcolix was a highly moral man, but I speculate that it is because of the dilemma that Nexon has forced Alcolix into that he changed his moral beliefs through this cognitive dissonance in order to cope with this overwhelming situation.

Nexon has proven to time and again to severely damage those who use its service. From what I can observe, Nexon has been ignoring everyone who was wrongfully banned due to the Magatia Party Quest Glitch. It has ignored all of the complaints written in the v73 Feedback thread and it has not re-opened another Feedback thread. It would appear that Nexon does not want to listen to its customers.

A few days ago, –Hime– announced that Nexon is “making sure [its] service is the best MapleStory experience anywhere,” as quoted from the following thread:

http://forum.nexon.net/MapleStory/fo...d/3306251.aspx

I would like to ask Nexon to please take this opportunity to prove that it is the best MapleStory experience anywhere, that it is not ignorant of its players’ issues, and most importantly that it is fulfilling its promise to its loyal customers.
Thank you for your time and patience.

Certain people bringing this up with GMs ought to get a real response. Have patience, not all Nexon employees are "teh suck."

So one guy is responsible for all of the chaos? Or could it be people don't look before they purchase?

Suddenly, I have no sympathy for you. Buying things with NX is against ToS. I don't know how I missed this the first time...

He could have bought NX to either buy stuff from MTS to sell for meso, or to buy meso sacks if they were available at the time.

And isn't the MTS all about buying/selling items for NX?

You'll probably want to save that on a mule that you'll never log on so that Nexon, even in extreme slowness, will eventually be able to verify that you have the item. Or you can be mean and sell it like whoever sold it to you. Plus, it's impossible for any items to be worth any sort of money because they have no real value and aren't supposed to be traded for real life money anyways, so Nexon has no obligation to help you at all. Spending real life money for virtual money with no value still doesn't mean they have to help you because it was your decision to do that.

Ohnononono, he must have bought it out of the MTS. Wink

But, uh, he still bought it without seeing the expiration. That, I don't have sympathy for. Wall of text didn't make it better, especially since I've heard it before.

He specifically said items that are expiring cannot be MTS'd.

Maspan,

Did it ever occur to you that he could have bought a vast sum of nx with his own money and then use that nx in mts to buy items that he could sell in the scania market?

There is no area in the OP that states that LastOath used nx to directly buy the sword.

By using Nx to buy items in Mts, the OP is actually following the ToS, for that is the main point of mts- to use nx that you have to buy items from others, so that if you have no way of obtaining nx, you can thus obtain nx via mts.

You're also overlooking one major part- Alcolix and LastOath are in the same world - Scania. Since these expiring items cannot be mts'ed, then that would mean he bought it via the mesos he earned from buying items in MTs.

However, I still believe it is the buyer's fault, for he was not careful enough as to see if the item would expire or not, nonetheless it is the buyer's fault for carelessly buying the item.

I'm not really so sorry as much as being bewildered that you didn't look at the item before just up and nabbing it. It doesn't necessarily make you a victim...

But regardless, let's hope Nexon gets on this soon.

You're assuming a complex series of events, when the information that he gave was that he used NX to SUPPLEMENTmesoss, not that he used nx to buy things from the MTS to generate mesos. The bolded also does not make sense, I specifically mentioned that the item could not have been bought in MTS, meaning I was obviously fully aware that he purchased it in the world the seller was in.

Anyways, the information that we were given was that he was using NX as well as mesos to purchase the item, not that he used NX to generate more mesos. I'm assuming the simplest series of events, not the most complex, which is the most reasonable assumption I can make.

Not using NX to supplement my game = win. Woohoo!

But Nexon ignoring something of this magnitude is probably thinking "It's only 20 people getting affected by this" as opposed to "This has huge ramifications for the rest of the people playing our games". And then there's simple laziness. Anyone remember the wedding glitch? Good several months before that got fixed! (if it even got fixed... dunno)

I don't see any elimination here. Assumptions can be dangerous! Also, people do crazy stuff irl with their money and assets, and I expect similar to MS, however the system might allow complex schemes.

There are 2 options -
He either directly used the nx along with mesos, or MTS'd to turn the nx into mesos.
The first is the simplest set of events, and the easiest. Thus I assumed this one. If he corrects me, I will apologize.
The second option is far more complex, difficult, and time consuming. Thus less likely, and a more dangerous assumption.

Neither one is improbable, but his wording implies that he directly spent the money on the weapon, not that he converted it.

I had a damn wedding receipt stuck in my inventory for a year before they fixed it, so yea.

More on topic: What kind of an absolute prostitute sells expiring gear, and how come its just not one nitwit lacking in attention, but several dumbskulls that buy them?

Someone was doing this in Bellocan a while back with a shield. it's no different than the people that sold their 52stat HTPs when Nexon announced that they would correct them.

The first set of events is also the most dangerous. There's nothing to guarantee NX+meso trades.

At any rate, I don't think this is important enough to spark rage wars over, and it's not the point of the topic anyways.

EDIT: Rage Wars happen if less decent people show up and get involved. Didn't say this was rage wars yet, now did I!

I'm appalled by Nexon's horrendous handling of this glitch but at the same time, knowing that guy spent several thousand dollars of real money on his equips kind of makes me want to see his stuff expire :/

Too bad people actually bought those items.
