Mush Shops are a more efficient way or selling than with a regular store permit?

An wandering mind leads to interesting thoughts. Chin

It's something I was pondering last night when I thought about how inconvenient it is to actually keep my computer on in order to sell stuff. Factoring in problems like disconnecting roughly overnight, people stealing a good spot I found, and having to relocate, I can easily look at upon a good extra week or two in order to clear a full inventory. However, let's look at all the goodies a week long Mush Shop has, because it usually only takes that long to sell the most expensive stuff I usually have:

1. Can hold a door spot for up to a week, 8 days if I set up shop minutes before it expires.
2. Don't have to worry about disconnecting (big factor)
3. Don't have to keep computer on (bigger factor)

Now I looked up the electricity it costs to run a desktop computer, because my laptop fails at keeping a shop open even for a few hours. My desktop, without the monitor, runs at about 120 watts/hour and is the only computer that can reliably keep a shop open overnight, and even for days.

How to calculate how much it costs to run my computer:
 Spoiler

Now, a week long Mush Shop costs $5.90, meaning if my computer needs to be on longer than two weeks, I actually waste money selling my stuff compared to paying NX for a shop. There's also the convenience factor; if I get really lucky with the Mush Shop, I can clear inventory in only a few days, leaving room to just mess around merchanting. So for only one dollar more, I can avoid getting headaches whenever my store closes due to lag or someone D/Cing me. I just pop in every 8-12 hours or so to see what sold, and close down/reopen the shop in the very same spot (usually a door spot at a popular FM like 13 or 18).

There's also the problem of how before I need to use a mule account to sell my stuff, which requires two shop permits, one for my mule account, and one for my main account. Why? It helps reduce the tax exchanging mesos.

Huge example would be trading 1 billion mesos. Trading it all at once at I'd be taxed 60 million mesos. HOWEVER, if I use two shop permits and sell something at 999,999 I would only get taxed 4 million mesos; by spending 3.6k NX I save 56m. With the current 10m/1k NX ratio I save ~2k worth of NX (56m converted to NX minus 3.6k NX). With the old ratio of 5m/1k I would save ~7.6k worth of NX. Goggleemoticon

Also, I like to keep my computers relatively healthy by not keeping it on. I don't want to risk overheating the computer(s), which would cost me way more than a few dollars to fix. Stunned

Long story short, I strangely feel that when it comes to selling your stuff, a Mush Shop is actually worth the bang for your buck since you can essentially hold up a good spot without having to go through the trouble of needing to keep a computer on, as well as needing to lurk repeatedly for a good spot. I also avoid the trouble of paying 3.6k NX every 3 months to lessen the impact of taxes because selling with a regular permit on my main account seems too inconvenient when I regularly train.

If you pay your own bills, mush stores for 2 weeks, I would think uses a fair amount less electricity than a computer on for 2 weeks, and its a lot easier too :p.

WhoopsI missed your section on that. ./idiot.

2 weeks is probably worth it too, but I don't really need 2 weeks to sell everything I have. 1 week long shop every month or two is enough for me.

Ever since I first started using Mushroom shops I haven't stopped =D. The convenience is lovely, and so is the ability to actually hold a nice spot (go away annoying people who like to DC others out of FM). And if you do any decent job of making mesos you should be able to make the approximately 10k NX per 2 weeks that is required for a 14-day permit.

I also hate to leave my characters on MS afk since I tend to use my laptop a lot for other things so I really don't like the amount of memory it takes up.

The only downside is that there is an irritating lag sometimes when you try to open up the shop, so I always have a regular shop permit too for situations when it lags.

I have also noticed that, in our home world of Ghettocan at least, selling stuff in a Mushiestore allows you to get more money for things than if you were using a regular permit.

^^^ Exactly ^^^

When people see a person selling the item, they feel more obliged to offer than if they see a third party doing it.

Eh, that only makes sense if you have so much stuff to sell you need to leave your computer on for 24 hours a day, 2 weeks in a row. Usually I only have shop set up 2-3 days a week for about 6-8 hours at a time.

Wait... isn't a Mushieshop a third party? :f6:
I get lower offers if I'm in a reg permit on my main than if I'm using a mushie.

Third party = Neither buyer or seller.

As long as you're consistent, I find it's better to just leave the money @ the mule. If it's over level 16 it can buy anything anyway, and I guess you could train it up as a Dawn Warrior / Nightwalker if you needed FM speed.

The most I've ever transferred from mule to main was 50mil to buy a mount, other than that - I've spent maybe 600m directly from the mule and traded the items to my main afterwards.

When I find valuable items I transfer them to the mule for storage, sell them from the mule, and use them from the mule. Pot costs are relatively negligible (currently my Paladin and NL are both able to loot as many mesos as they spent on pots)

I do have 2 computers able to run MS so item transfers are easy for me to accomplish.

Why not just setup the shop on a mule of the same account as your main. o.o" that way you can just transfer mesos by storage...?

Unless you're one of those people who like to have two accounts logged on at the same time. =p

I usually d/c overnight when i set up a regular shop, so my items have more exposure if I use a mushie shop.

EDIT: this thread is about real money, my bad .___.
