Gosh, I wonder why most girls aren't gamers.

I don't know, but stuff like this certainly doesn't help.

It's too bad, EA. I was looking forward to buying the new Sims game.

First we have rape video games, one of which was defended by its publisher after Amazon (belatedly) banned it... Now this?

So what do you guys think... Does sexism discourage you or your female and feminist friends from gaming? Do you just chalk it up to the fringe types?

Personally, I've tried to do the latter, but when stuff like this is being sanctioned (nay, richly rewarded!) by one of the largest video game companies in the US, I start to wonder.

Not many guys - much less even girls would know about Rapelay, the game I'm assuming you're talking about being defended by Illusion. That's about as much of a game as most visual novels are. That's nowhere near mainstream. It's a porn game, which generally aren't marketed toward women.

Overall though, there certainly are games that pander toward men and are more well known, DoA Extreme Breast Simulatoreach Volleyball comes to mind. The booth babe thing certainly is disgusting, but I don't really think that the marketing towards a male audience hinders girls getting into games, I'd say its more of a societal stereotype that's been around since they've been introduced - games are for the "nerdy, lonely, geek, loser (roneryotakulol)" and the companies have just adjusted to market towards that.

To be honest, after Grand Theft Auto, where you can murder police officers and bang hookers, (and commit a lot of other crimes,) I don't think video games can go down any further. But if you think Grand Theft Auto is not bad enough, there was at some point a game hwere you could play a Nazi shooting Jews in a concentration camp; and on Gaia Online, you can dress your character as anything ranging from a Nazi, to a satanist, to a prostitute pole-dancing and having only little stars covering her crotch and boobs.

I think girls don't play certain games(talking about online) due to the sheer number of males that dominates what is, the internet. Most of the games that are available online cater to the fantasy, anime/manga, war, and sex types of games. These have always been leaned towards men mainly because girls have always been known to be "less hardcore" and "more casual". In fact, the main reason why the Wii/DS sells so well is it caters to girls/women. Wii Fit anybody...?

And sexism doesn't bother me much at all. The game industry always seems to piss somebody off somehow, and most of the buying public still buy/download the game a week later. They wait in lines for them. All that matters to the game industry is that green stuff they pile in their wallets.

Quick tip here:Back in the 80's when they added "Parental Advisories", game and music sales went skyrocketing.

I believe it is because girls generally have different interests.

The girls that I know that do game are upset by sexism too, but that doesn't stop them from gaming because it's not like they won't find sexism anywhere else.

Remember when the US was speaking about how it would be bad to have women in combat duty.
And one of the reasons was they could get sand caught "in" them.
...
You have no idea how many N64 controllers were lost to girls vags. Glitter

That is why they don't play as often.

EDIT: pineapple- I just noticed this is the Rubik's cube

Well currently the amount of female gamers is on the rise. And more titles aim to be asexual in manner or female oriented.
But even past that. The stigma that gaming is a nerdy guys world is weakening all the time. Thus allowing a bigger audience to give gaming a chance. I believe that within the next decade video games will become completely integrated into dual gender audiences- in aim and sells.

...
Now why all those anime freak girls that don't play video games... that befuddles me.

Not only is it not marketed toward women... Was it even marketed towards Amercia? There's been controversy about it in Japan too, as far as I know.

That's why you typically play a type of game. People only play what they like, what they don't is ignored. I usually play shooters, RPGs, and Action games. Sometimes I'll play Simulatiors like Sim City or something.

My mom is more into Puzzle games and RPGs. Sister likes Shooters and Logic games.

This "game" is probably not even something that was main-streamed for a reason. Instead of freaking out over a rape "game" maybe they should do something to help protect real people from rape.

Its just over-reaction. It's too easy to start a witch-hunt about anything these days.
