Elitism
#1
A simple question -
Do you think you're better than everybody else? Better than a group of people?
I think it's odd how people's answers and personalities will often greatly contrast - few people will admit to being elitist, but will then directly state that they refuse to listen to ___, think that ___ is beneath them, etc. I see this frequently regarding other forums (Hell, I've done it myself a couple times, though I don't honestly think that way 100% of the time, only when I'm frustrated), ethnicity/religion/sexuality, and all kinds of other things.

Depends on the situation.

If I see some scene kid with long hair, and eyeliner and listening to some sh'itty emo band, I know that I am better than him.

Elitists can never out-perform modest people in being modest. That's where Elitism fails. Chin

I believe I'm better than ignorant people and the same people Opeth described.
Other than that, I'm a pretty average, boring person.

Define better?
I know I view myself above people I meet online who talk juz kai dis kkkkkk.
Is it right? Do I try? No. Just happens.

Also have a bad habbit of looking down on people under whatever level character I'm on in Maple, or people with crap KDR (under .9, more or less) in CA.

Context plz.

It depends to be honest. If you're being elitst because you're self-confident, then it's better than being low-confident. Being over-confident, on the other side, is bad.

I will be elitist when I need to.

I admit to be an elitist at times, it's true. Back when I was in High School or my first couple years in college, if I saw a little kid that was annoying that I happen to know, I always wanted to beat up those certain kids. I also knew I was smarter than certain kids in my class(es), but did not have the willpower to flaunt it, because it bothers me at times to be flaunting too much. A little flaunting causes competition, but too much is unhealthy. A certain student in my classes flaunted all the time, but when I flaunted back at him to prove that I was smarter in the IT-field when it came to computers, he was speechless.

Uh... Mas I think you got your definition wrong.

People are not all created equal. I am a guy from a good family, I got an education, and I treat people well unless they're assholes, in which case I avoid them. Compare me to some street punk that bullies kids in school, does drugs and treats his parents like pomegranate. It's not elitism for me to think I am better than such a guy, I KNOW I am better than him, and so does anybody with a brain.

Elitism is when somebody gets rich/famous/just plain arrogant and he thinks he's better than everybody else because of his membership in some "members only" club or his IQ score or some such junk. Such people look down their noses at respectable people, and they are just as much assholes as the street punk I was talking about in the previous paragraph. THAT's elitism.

What exactly do you classify as elitist?

I base what I think of myself on facts; if someone does something that I think is completely wrong, I think I'm better because I don't do that act. I mean, there is just a level of realization where you can tell when someone is better than someone else. To me, that isn't an elitist, an elitist is someone who knows/thinks they are better and take too much advantage of it.

That's an extreme of it, but elitism is the idea that you are an "elite" and that whatever other group of people (or all people) are not, coupled with the belief that being an "elite" makes you better than the other group. Whether on the extreme edge like you mentioned or simply "I'm a jock I'm better than nerds" it is still elitism.

I feel that I am better than the people who criticize me for taking Chinese as a foreign language, getting battered with how "hard" it is.
I made a 98 for the year in Chinese 1,
they (The main person who teased me about it) made a 78 in Spanish.
Their gPA suffered, mine excelled.
I'm anxious to see how much shiet I get for taking Chinese 2 and Japanese 1 this year. o_e

That's what I was saying. Elitism comes with arrogance and cliquism. Jocks are in a group, whether they're sitting in the bar watching football, or actually playing football. They look down at nerds because they are stronger, more attractive, whatever. How is that any different than assholes in a "members only" club laughing at how only THEY are in the club, or MENSA telling each other how much smarter they are than everybody else? At its root elitism is the same bull$hit taking many different forms.

Well, I do think I'm better than certain people...such as rapists, murderers and whatnot. But I don't just look at a random person walking down the street and think "oh wow, I'm so much better than them".

I think that everybody is slightly elitist in some manner :/
