Japanese Games on American DS(i)s

I'm a Pokenerd. I want the Gold/Silver Remakes, and I'm too impatient to wait for the English versions.
I tried Googling to see if the Japanese Games would be combatable with my American DS(i), and everything I find says they no longer region code them, so it should work. Asked the folks at EllinForest and I'm told I need some special card....
Which is it?

DS Games are region-free, as opposed to Nintendo Console games. So it should work, if it's not a DSi exclusive, from what I hear.

So yes, you should be able to import it and play it on a US System.
